The game is in the second era. Game starts or at least the events in Coldhabour where you are rescued is in the year 2E 583 Given that the game is in its fifth year I can imagine the events of the new chapter to be in the year 2E 588. Overall I am not sure the exact year it would have been for the Summerset expansion but given it was released last year If you go by years by how long the game has existed well that would have been in the year 2E 587, 2E 588 is just a best guess for the timeline of Elsweyr.

Well, thanks for insight.
Problem is that 2nd era as it was in previous games is quite murky period. We have very solid and consistent descriptions of Tamriel's state in the end of 1st era and in the beginning of 3rd era. In both cases Empire is perceived like something good which keeps most of races and smaller states in "check". Even annexation of Morrowind to Tiber's Septims empire is shown like generally favorable event (by Imperial historians, though).
And in ESO it all opposes that lore, with imperials shown as pure evil, and not as "necessary evil". All together with lack of impact of 3 banner war and planemeld on future events, ESO period is like external branch of ES lore, not a part of the whole tree.
This idea is actually realistic, however, and I endorse it 100%.King Orgnum
