stranger finishes my quest

Hiyas.

I was questing in a group with a friend (Eyes of Azra, Grathwood) and when we got to destroy the soul pinions in coldharbour some other player who wasn't in group with us, destroyed both and rescued the npc we should free without us noticing it, cause we were still fighting some daedra at the entrance of the cave.

How is it possible, a player who isn't in my group, can finish a quest for me?

Bad design. I had similar happen while I was doing the main storyline, thankfully with an additional toon and had already done it with another so I did not miss out on knowing what was going on. I did note that had I not already been familiar with the quest, I would have been mystified at what was supposed to happen given that another player triggered things ahead of me and they were done and gone by the time I got there.

The main storyline should be instanced. It's ridiculous to have a major plotline be disruptable by other players.

When questing in any public zone, if you have an objective to destroy a certain mob or object you don't have to destroy it personally, you only need to be nearby when it is destroyed.

Also, as long as you get one hit in on the boss or mob, you will get credit for the kill, which will advance the quest.

Most bosses that have to spawn to be killed to satisfy a quest stage will respawn rather quickly if your in the area. You can see this on new content where something spawns almost continuously when there are a lot of players around.

So, there is no kill stealing or objective stealing in the game. Sometimes, though, you might have to wait a minute or two if you do not get the credit from getting in a hit, or being near when the boss dies.

But that shouldn't be that way.
I love questing and it isn't cool, when someone other than me can finish my quest, just becaus I am "nearby". What if I just walk around a bit in a zone where I have a quest, which I don't play actually, and someone finishes it because all I de facto need to do is kill some mob? And not every player wants to "go in cave - click here - click there - finish quest" some of us just want to look around, to explore and take things slow.

Outside of being grouped, you do have to get a hit in in the boss. It is the rare thing where you get credit for being nearby.

It should be possible for ZOS to change the design, so that a player character which has accepted a sharable quest which requires the character to kill a specific "boss" must inflict damage to that boss in a fight, to satisfy that requirement if the boss dies as its outcome. However, I doubt that they will, whether the design should "be that way".

This probably depends upon the specific quest, because I know I've frequently been given credit for being nearby even when I was unable to get a hit in yet. In the most extreme example during recent questing in Murkmire, I had to kill a named NPC in a delve; I was far around the corner so wasn't even in line of sight, yet still received credit for the kill with regards to completing the quest objective. However, the boss had no loot for me to collect.

I think part of the confusion is the difference between earning credit for a quest and earning credit for loot. To get loot off of an NPC (including bonus rewards for events), or to get the achievement of completing a delve by killing it's main boss, you do have to get a hit in on them. To get credit for killing specific NPCs for quests, with some exceptions as quests are set up many different ways, you normally just need to be nearby when they die.

Edit: For clarification, I was ungrouped.
