I was told to find an alcove with a red drape over it to have an easier time to the quest objective. I found one, but it led me into a cave that just leads me to outside. What gives?

The wall sections with the curtains lead to secret passages. The idea is to use them to evade the guards. One of them, presumably the one you found, will also allow you to make a stealthy exit from the castle.0
