Magicka Based Sorc Tank?

Not sure if it is viable, I am looking to build a Tank with a focus on Magicka using 1H&S with Lightning Staff back bar for Magicka regen. I figured I would do half points in Magicka and half in Stamina, little more in Magicka with enchants at final build end. I want the character able to handle tanking and to be able to dish out fair damage for solo play while questing. Not sure if that is possible, but I am willing to be a tank in this game if I can enjoy the build. Below are my chosen skills, I will run Heavy Armor build of course, 5/1/1 for Undaunted Mettle. I will also run Dunmer Vampire for the fire resist and the 10% regen. With the new Dunmer passives coming, this should also help slightly boost my hybrid tank damage slightly. Please let me know if this is a viable build for most 4 man content. I do not think I will even try trials, I also do not PvP in this game at all.

Bar 1 - 1H&S - Weapon is dagger to help with crit heals

Shield Wall (ult) - Puncture - Low Slash - Power Surge - Boundless Storm - Shattering Prison

Energy Overload (ult) - Liquid Lightning - Bolt Escape - Endless Fury - Dark Conversion - Bound Aegis

Would this style of play be viable for vet dungeons? Dont wanna waste time making a tank if I might as well stick to DD lol

This sounds kind of like my PvP build lol. I tank normal stuff with that all the time, but some of the vet dlc becomes too much if you're not built for it. The problem with random que is you would do fine in vFG1, but maybe not so much in new vet dlc.

What sets are you wearing? I never had trouble killing stuff in overland and quests with a low damage dedicated tank.

If you want to run a sorc tank, a better setup for vet content would be:

Front Bar: Replenishing Barrier, Puncture, Heroic Slash, Balance, Dark Deal, Bound Aegis
Back Bar: Aggressive Warhorn, Elemental Blockade, Critical Surge, Bound Aegis, Silver Leash, Restraining Prison

Having Barrier on your front bar will give you magicka regen while slotted, Balance + Dark Deal will give you infinite sustain, Critical Surge + Elemental Blockade + Dark Deal will give you all of the healing you need, and Silver Leash + Restraining Prison will give you the CC you need as a tank.

I cannot emphasize enough that Balance + Dark Deal will give you unlimited sustain. That combo will turn sustain into easy mode for you :) plus Dark Deal can be spammed for 10k+ heals.

For sets I would wear whatever is suggested as most viable I suppose lol. I can to be able to tank while still doing fair damage.

For sets you would want to run Dragonguard body pieces, Alkosh jewelry + weapons, and monster set pieces that will give you magicka regen. Dragonguard is great for sorc tanks because it makes their already cheaper ulti's even cheaper and it comes with more magicka regen, so you can pump out Warhorns more often.

Viable simply depends on what you want to tank. I used to tank dungeons with simply tank gear slapped on magsorc DD. Grothdarr/Swarm mother, Thunderbug and Julianos with power surge, liquid lightning, blockade and boundless storm constant healing was normal. Was easy 20k+ dps on bosses.

I definitely tanked vCoS and vRoM HM with that but I had to use engine guardian to help with sustain. I didn't tank newer dungeons than that though and it would be garbage for trials.

Tanks are already hybrid with magicka and stamina pretty much equal. Usually stamina a little higher so that when you take a synergy you get stamina. Using stamina for taunt, low slash and block/roll dodge/interupt and then having utility skills be magicka based is the current meta. There is really not much point to have more magicka except for fights where you offtank and don't have much to do so you turn more into a healer.

Try fully dedicated tanking, get a feel for it, and then use what you know of DD to meet in the middle for your hybrid ideas.

Advertising yourself as hybrid or as doing "fair damage" as tank in a pug may be a hard sell in vet. The consensus seems to be if its not a traditional trinity, then an extra DD is used to make 3DD & tank or healer. Grouping with friends avoids that and also helps with the learning curve.

Sorcs tank seem to becoming more popular. Just do thunderbug and liverwire and you can push out some damage.

First, ignore the ridicule of being a sorc tank.
Second, spec selfishly (you're a sorc, afterall).
Third...shutdown the naysayers by accomplishing dlc vet HM's (Scalecaller, Moonhunter Keep etc).

I will now stress the importance of Clannfear's op heal, blood magic passive heal from Crit Frags (since you wanna do damage), Inner Fire ranged taunt, and Swarm Mother undaunted monster set (for pulling ranged enemies. The more hp you have the stronger your heals.

    Good fortune on your journeys!

Most of my characters are hybrids of some sort or another, and my lightning mage is damage/tank. He's not even optimized for the tanking role, but I've been able to handle base game vet dungeons on him. It's not something I do regularly - I'll typically do normals with him and leave the vets to my tank tank. I imagine if you were to build as a tank tank, it would work quite well.
