Thief or assassin build?

mashugana
mashugana
Can anyone suggest a build to fit the idea of a theif or assassin? So far I have only played as a ranged magicka Templar with heavy emphasis on the Destro Staff. I'd like to make an alt that is sneaky, back stabby, and would fit with the Dark Briotherhood story line. I do not know if that is a magicka Nightblade, a Dual Wield stamina character, or....well, I'm lost.

I don't care much about end game or being elite - I just want something survivable in normal PvE that also fist my assassin concept. So far everything I've tried has been a hot mess of mismatched skills, bad damage, and a lot of trips to the Wayshrine.

Thank you.

Well either Magicka or Stamina Nightblade. Maybe Dual Wield Stamina Nightblade.

    Aldmeri Dominion

Thanks! Does a Stamina Nightblade focus on the Dual Weapon skills mostly? Any suggestion on which of the Nightblade skills to use? I assume stealth and sneaking will come from the Nightblade side I just do not know which.

My current Bosmer stamblade is a ghost of an assassin. I use both bow and dual weapons. With racial bonuses as they are currently I can sneak up just off center to the front of NPCs and still be in stealth at melee range. I use the crafted set that has the 5 piece bonus of full movement while in stealth. He feels unkillable even in public dungeons with a lot of movement in and out of melee range.
    Hope that helps.

If you want to cater most of your build for thieving on a stamina character, consider the following:

You would like to try Magicka first and use both dual wield swords and a restoration staff on the back for heal backup, though the sap essence and the siphon skill will provide with heals, so you can still have a stabbing melee magicka damage based assassin.

    Skills you want to use

    Lotus fan
    Killers blade
    Merciless resolve
    concealed weapon
    shadowy disguise
    swallow soul
    sap essence.

    soul harvest ultimate
    meteor from mages guild,

The new passives will gut your Bosmer. With the new update to passives, the best race for Thief and Assassin is Khajiit.
Taking stealth away from the Bosmer is like taking magic away from the Altmer, making Nords allergic to mead, or making Orcs pretty.

Yup. ZOS has gutted Bosmer stealth, but kept it on khajit. So now instead you can be a bouncy roll dodge weirdo "assassin", or just be some catman. It's really stupid.

Otherwise, as a bosmer thief/assassin since launch, the rest of the advice in this thread is spot on. Just don't go wood elf. That's all. But if you do (cuz wood elves have great sustain) just don't put skill points in Hunters Eye, the new replacement for Stealthy.

This. Might I recommend becoming a vamp as well so you can ditch your Nights Silence set and still have insane speed in sleath. Actually, if the changes go thru, will Night Terror even still be needed for full sleath for a Khajiit thief?

If you want more than 3m, then yes. It got taken back down to 3m in the most recent update.

    Bosmer are still boned.

The links I've provided are for (mostly) stamina Nightblade, dual wield as the main weapon, some with either a bow or two-handed weapon to complement the primary. I personally wouldn't follow a build for the sake of making a copy, but just to give you some ideas since you are still questioning, as it is more fun to actually make your own character the way you have fun with him/her. It's up to you but I think it's a good direction for what you are seeking. :)

As I've said, have fun doing your own thing.
You can always adjust to making changes later, should you ever decide to do more end game stuff, and if it's not till later down the road, those guides and builds will be different than those that we have now since changes are inevitable.

I wouldn't want to assume anything, all I know is that you're not active on (at least) the forums, but have existed since (at least) August 2015, here. Based on what you're asking, I may assume you are new or not active.

A lot of the time, it's just experience and learning mechanics, fundamental ways of staining resources and hitting high DPS parses or just getting your gear and skills that help, however, I'd rather not say that's the case. I'd rather ask you what experience with the Nightblade class have you had and how it's different oppose to how well you may play your Templar.

How would you define mismatched skills?
Would you be comfortable tweaking a build to dispose these mismatches?
I cannot directly answer with a resolve to this.

Bad damage is another thing that is broad and hard to find an answer to...
Sustain could play a big part of this though.

Trips to wayshrines, meaning, death? Well...
Make sure you have Siphoning Strikes to restore health on light/heavy attacks, when morphed (based on what resource you'll want to focus on), it will also restore stamina or magic on light/heavy attacks and more when the duration is over.

Any siphoning ability will provide further heals, some, while dealing damage.

Shadow Cloak is good for PVP, maybe in some overland PVE but not so much in group dungeons.

Summon Shade for that minor maim is useful for solo play, one morph provides a cleave to apply it as an AoE which is great in PvE against mobs (not updated on site), the other becomes; range, stationary, and allows you to recall back to it.

Aspect of Terror not good for groups as the crowd control it provides will annoy others and drop their DPS as they move out of AoE, however, very fun in PVP and useful for solo play as it keeps mobs off your arse.

Blur reduce AoE damage by 25%, one morph will increase speed by 30% while another will fortify physical and magic resistance by 2.5%.

    I've rambled enough though...
