Looking for Inspiration

Hey there! I'm a long time casual player, playing on and off since beta. I've never properly committed to PVP until now and previously have played DW/Bow Dot Stam Sorc, Melee Mag NB and Snipe stam gankblade (i know i'm sorry). I find it very hard to give up the nightblade due to cloak. Being able to cloak away from a zerg has been what is drawing me back consistently.

This gets to the crux of my issue. I find it very hard to survive in Cyrodil when playing, (even though i have full impen, i use dodge role and self heals etc). Primarily I die to additional players adding to groups. I don't want to be a cheese snipe ganker and want to improve. Recently I have looked at playing more unorthodox builds such as a Bow Stam Sorc or a Bow Warden pet build.

I'm looking for any advice on how to transition away from the cheese builds and get used to Cyrodil Pvp. Do i just persist without relying on cloak and get used to the other builds. Am i better going to non cp (will i live longer)?

Any advice would be much welcomed.

    Try MagDK. It's pretty fun.

Thanks for the comment .I've tried most class at low level and don't seem to get how to survive. Is it a learn to play thing, were i need to suck it up and get better by getting beat down or is it something I can actively work on.

For Cyrodiil, survival is a numbers game. Those 1vXers you see on YouTube? They’re fighting potatoes who don’t know what they’re doing. Join a PVP guild with a dedicated healer or two. That’ll help your survivability a great deal.

If you want to 1vX, you need to remember that the stuff you’re seeing on YouTube consists of carefully selected clips, and that even the best 1vXer will be outclassed easily by a coordinated group.

Very good point. Now i suppose my next question would be can i make an unorthodox build (Bow/ 1h & S sorc or Bow / 2h warden) work in a pvp group or will i be expected to use the meta builds?

What are you wanting to do in Cyrodiil?

I ask mainly because you mention cloaking away fron the zerg. Are you wanting to do small group play? Zergsurfing? Capturing and defending objectives? Solo?

Whatever you want to do will inform what you are looking for in a build.

If you want to play where the zergs are AND you want to be able to run away, I'm not sure you'll get a better skill than Cloak.

If you want to play where the zergs are and not have to run away, you might look at some 1vXing builds. These take practice to use well and are easier vs inexperienced players, but it's hard to beat 1vXers for survivability.

If you want to focus on objectives and you don't want to run away, personally, I find it fun to run with a group, small or large. Alternatively, zerg surfing is a great way to learn battlefield awareness from fighting other zergs as long as you pay attention - its how I learned to run away on a MagDK.

In any case, if you arent running away from the zerg, you will probably die to greater numbers eventually. Everyone will.

As for class? I'd say go with one you enjoy playing unless you find a build you really like. There will definitely be a learning curve and lots of deaths as you adjust to not cloaking and running, but if you are okay with that, awesome.

    Hope this helps!

PUG and LFG groups in zone chat won't care.

It will depend on the PVP guild. Some are loosely organized, some have optional builds, and others run very tightly with pre-set builds. You can ask around on your faction and see what your guilds say. IME, the guilds I worked with would take the time to work with a player who wanted a specific build and would either tweak it to better fit the group or explain why the build wouldn't work in a group setting.

Generally speaking, I find it better to play an off meta build you enjoy than a meta build you hate.

Thanks for the input mate. Originally i just wanted to experience cyrodil so inevitably fell in to the Zerg v Zerg battles. In all other mmo's i've played i've generally done solo/small group play and enjoy classes that can survive in those environments. This in turn lead me to nightblade. My lack of survival skills has pushed me towards the snipe gank playstyle and while fun for a short while it feels a bit cheap.

I had previously enjoyed melee mag nb but cant seem to get back into it after taking an enforced break from the game.

Class wise i've always enjoyed zipping around the battlefield as a stam sorc so think either stam sorc wit ha bow or a hunter style warden could be fun.

With a small group if 4-6 good players you can do well against even bigger groups. Unless you are playing a gankblade possibly a magsorc it will be hard to do solo and effectivly get away from zergs.

Yea, if you’re doing small group stuff escape is key. That means either being a sorc and streaking away, a nightblade for cloak, or a really tanky build.

Most of the small groups survive solely because the large groups can’t be bothered to run them down. Why concern yourself with 3 people when you have 30 in front of you. If the big groups aren’t chasing an objective and have some downtime they will come and you’ll need to escape.
Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten
