capped cps, dps struggles

let me tell you this. I, SUCK at dpsing.
I have capped cp and all, can run normal dungeons fairly easily but I struggle SO damn freaking much when it comes to vet dungeons, even the vanilla ones, so much so my partner has to tell me that I’m shi*.

I’m pretty damn decent at healing and I make a fine tank if I do say so myself and I enjoy healing and tanking more than dpsing but occasionally I do like to dps for a change... and I sux something fierce.

I can probably pull 20-something-k max in normal dungeons but that’s just... normal dungeons and it’s not a sustained fight, it’s “whoosh” and gone. you l33t people can solo them and all, so it’s nothing to brag about, it’s shameful even.

to make the matter worse I usually get a horrific pug dd when I dps vet stuff, making me look even worse than I really am, diminishing my self esteem to none!

my gear setup is usually combination of hundings/spriggan/automaton (not all 3 of them of course! 5/5 of 2 of those sets and some monster sets) for stam and julianos/war maiden/mothers sorrow for mag. no trial gear here, I don’t really get to do them.

I also can’t seem to master light attack weaving/animation cancelling either. high latency makes it hard, and I still don’t know how to ani-can properly. some abilities are harder to light weave than others too.

so yes, lots of whinging and beating myself up over failing vet spindle 2 just now_ I feel sh*te! but any advice or constructive criticism without being super harsh, would be very much appreciated.

sincerely,

    1. 20k is enough for a majority of content in game, but you may have far less from what you are suggesting. But don’t worry about dummy parses. They are easy to inflate. It really shows if you wave a rotation down and can do it stationary without needing to shield p, block, dodge roll etc. It sounds like you may need help with your rotation. Check out some alcast videos on YouTube.
2.Try to find people in game help you out. This can go a long way. It may be an issue of mechanics in the dungeon.
    3. Don’t tie your self esteem to a video game. Never ever ever. Your value of yourself should not be tied to a dps dummy or how you do in a dungeon. I think this is were some pvers struggle in pvp, they get beat and take it too much to the soul.
    4. You gear seems off, as in are you combing all three? You should be using a monster helm. What traits do you have? What enchantments on your weapon.
    5. Are you using food? Are you using pots? The basic pots are super cheap and you should use them
    6. Animation canceling and weaving. I have insane latency as I live in Costa Rica and play in NA. You can still weave. Just continually hit light attack. Practice using force pulse—-> light attack——>force pulse.
animation candle isn’t as important in pve. In pvp, you can line up burst with it. Heavy attack, surprise attack, bash.
    7. Positioning. Do you stay in front of the healer or in their range? Out of aoe, not in front of the boss?

It just takes some practice. Work on getting a set rotation by hitting a target dummy. Maybe check out trusty ole Alcast’s website for ideas about roations. Make sure to keep your dots down (seems to be a common mistake). Also, you really have to get decent at light attack weaving. Get in the habit of light attacking before every skill. Its just a huge part of the game now. Dont even worry about animation cancelling at this point. It will come automatically, once you start speeding up your rotation.

Don’t sweat it. 20k is plenty for normal trials, and Relequen and Siroria do make a difference. Also AY and TFS for stam. Find a fun group to do them with. They do exist. What platform are you on? I’m in a guild with Friday night drunken trials (you don’t have to be drinking, just have to be relaxed) and also Sunday Scrubday for people brand new to trials who need a lot of explanation. You might have to seek them out, but there are some great, supportive groups out there to do trials with.

EDIT: If anyone is interested, the guild is Warscorn Artemisia. Contact @Kittehwinks.

Wall of Text incoming, TLDR: Practice weaving with one ability first, don't bother with bar swapping too much in the beginning.

In my opinion, just focus on the very basics first. Start with practicing weaving, maybe on a dummy at first. It works as follows: you click your light attack button, then you use your ability right after. This leads to the light attack animation getting overridden by the spell animation. You can use an ability every 1 second, and you want to do a light attack before each of them. Usually the animation of the ability takes ~1 second, so the animation is playing while you wait.
This means effectively that you light attack and then use an ability right after. Then you wait 1 second, and do it again. So:
click LA -> immediately use ability -> wait 1 second -> click LA -> immediately use ability -> wait 1 sec -> etc.
As mentioned before, you can practice this with force pulse or elemental weapon (psijic) on magicka, and maybe shrouded dagger or crushing weapon (psijic) for stamina. Get a feel for the 1 second wait time between light attacks by practicing this on a dummy. If the light attack goes through (you can hear the sound) try it a bit faster, if the light attack doesn't go through, wait a little more between the light attacks. Kill a few dummies like that, then try it out in some normal dungeons.

Once you are comfortable with that you add 1 or 2 DoTs (Damage over Time) to it. Make sure you set "Quick cast groud abilities" in you settings to "always". I would try a build without much bar swapping at first until you are comfortable with using the abilities below.

Easy mode build without bar swapping, with cheap potions but lower DPS:
For magicka, put Elemental Blockade on your bar, put force pulse on your bar. Put a class DoT on you bar (for sorc that would be Liquid Lightning, for Night Blade that would be Twisting Path, for Templar Blazing Spear... every class has one).
Put on inner light, and put on a source of Major Sorcery (The Mages guild ability Entropy + morphs works for this, but most classes have a better spell for it). As your ultimate, use meteor or the Destro Ultimate.
You use your class DoT, use Elemental Blockade, use 7 to 8 force pulses, and repeat. Use your ultimate whenever it is ready. Don't forget to weave your light attacks between all those spells. The wait timing can vary a little bit, but you get used to that eventually. Whenever your Major Sorcery ability runs out, cast it again.

For stamina, the same works but you can use dual wield and replace Blockade with Blood Craze, replace Force Pulse with Shrouded Daggers, Replace your class Dot with Deadly Cloak, replace your Major Sorcery ability with Rearming Trap and Inner Light with Expert Hunter from the fighters guild skills. Use Flawless Dawnbraker As your Ultimate.
If you master this, it should give you enough damage damage to get through all vet Base Game dungeons and the easier vet DLC dungeons.

For end game builds (for ex. Alcasts builds)
You can now cancle an ability by bar swapping, so if you want to use an ability on the other bar, you are already there once your 1 second wait time ends. This means if your next spell is an ability on your other bar, you do:
Light Attack -> immediately after use ability -> immediately after swap bar -> (other bar) wait 1 second -> LA -> ability -> wait 1 sec -> proceed as usual with your rotation.

As for sets, I would stick with Julianos + Mothers Sorrow for Magicka, Hundings + Spriggan for Stamina.
Make sure you use the appropriate food (Witch Mothers Potent Brew for Magicka, Dubious Carmoran Throne for Stamina).
Allocate your CP as suggested on Alcasts website.

I understand that ping problems suck. I personally would not be playing the game if I had a constant bad ping. However you can still do good DPS with a high ping. People still do solid parses on the PTS even though they have 200-300 ping.

The key to good DPS is understanding mechanics and practice, practice, practice.

Step 1: Stop trying to animation cancel. It comes naturally in a light attack weave.

Step 2: Light attack > skill > light attack
NOT skill > light attack > skill

Should be able to hit 30k no problem if you practice this. Find a target dummy and practice

Another common issue I’ve seen with players struggling with their DPS is maintaining their buffs. (If someone covered this already, sorry I didn’t see it).

Don’t get tunnel visioned on just doing damage. Keep your major brutality/sorcery up 100%. Depending on your class, you could have other like minor brutality/sorcery or minor berserk. The easiest way to keep your major buffs up is through potions.

Once you get the light attack weave down, work on keeping your dots up like some others have suggested. Then add in your buffs and you’ll see your damage really start to go up. If you practice hard enough, it’s not so difficult to keep near 100% uptime on buffs and dots and hit most of your light attacks.

The dummy is good for practice, but don’t get too hung up on the DPS number. If you’re on PC, use the Combat Metrics addon and focus on those dots and buffs.

    Good luck!

Yes well my healer wished she could get dps that did 20k in dungeons most of the time

Imo play the way you want to play i can hit 20-30kdps with my Templar that i switched to dps why using nothing but Templar skills - i am ocd in games i need a theme -

Only time i would say go meta even on skills would be pug trials or leaderboards

ps 20k in a normal dungeon means you could prob solo the thing if you had some healing skill to

To everyone saying that 20k-ish is good enough and to play the way you want, that’s great and you’re right. But OP asked for help on getting better than that.
