My biggest problem with ESO is the lack of any progression. i feel as strong at level 1 as i do at level 50 CP 350. i have no way of knowing if i am playing my class right or doing a good job playing the class in general. i play on Xbox One, so i have no ability to use mods.

it just feels like you are swimming up river against the current.

If you beat vma, you did excellent.
If you beat all vet trials, you did great.
If you beat all vet pledges, you did good.
If you beat all quest, you did ok.
    Thats what I tell myself.
I did all vet pledges, so I think I'm good.
    2 more things to beat.

Are you having fun? If yes, you are playing it right.

as a 32 year old gamer, i have stopped having fun when the Xbox 360/PS3 came out haha. i just play games to kill the massive amount of free time i have (on disability and never leave the house)

Games today are really garbage compared to PS2/N64/SNES generations.....imo

While I can definitely see where you're coming from with that sentiment, it's true - just aim for having fun. Make goals for yourself like soloing dungeons or getting achievements. That sort of thing. You might find you really like a specific thing and then you can ask around for a guild or look at strategies or records or whatever for that thing.

If you are being helpful and kind to your fellow players by offering advice, crafting them gear, or helping them clear content, you are doing good.

If you are not dying often, pulling your weight in group content for your particular role, and clearing vet content, you are doing well.

It helps to try soloing public dungeons, craglorn group events, and world bosses.
That helped me see that my character was getting more capable.

By setting your goals that you wish to accomplish in the game that make you smile. For learning your class you have friends, guildies, and lots of videos for the basics. For progression that is up to the individual as what they enjoy in the game. Though maxing out the skill lines that you need for your build is always good to do. Plus getting all the skill points you can through shards, quests, PvP/bgs, dungeons, trials, and arenas. Have your mount maxed out. And learn the traits you need in crafting and be sure to max out provisioning and alchemy, and the undaunted skill line for the passives for your character as they help. Good luck :)

Target dummies can help with learning rotations and dueling for many other things to help you refine your build and play style.

while some of the above answers are good ones (I personally support the "if you're having fun, you're doing well" position), there ARE ways to feel like you're progressing, if that's what you really want

as just one personal example - my main is a NB stamina. I didn't use any online builds - just things i heard people talk about and recommend from time to time, plus my own theory-crafting for which skills ought to work together well and which ones I liked using. I could play through all pve content reasonably well with this philosophy, and with a guild, I could do dungeons, vet dungeons, even trials passably.

Then, cuz I was getting kind of bored, I started doing research on some of the more dedicated, more popular builds. I trimmed out the stuff that was too grindy, but I still aimed for the accessible armor sets, cp builds and skill rotations. And watched my avg dps just about double.

Now, most pve content, which was easy but could still occasionally be moderately challenging, is nearly faceroll easy. I blaze through pve content, which slightly bothers me, but now things that used to be hard pve-wise are fairly easy, and I contribute far better to my grouping activities.

In short, I can very definitely say I made progress, and I didn't access some new skills or a big chunk of new cp's - I just used everything I already had in a different way and changed my output, rather dramatically.

Now, unless you're already at the top of dps/survivability/whatever playstyle you follow, I imagine that, if you WANT - you can sift through the various builds available for your class/role, and probably increase your outgoing whatever - again, if that's what you want/need to feel like you're progressing. HOWEVER...

however...keep in mind that if you pick up one or more of these builds, those builds are going to dictate, to at least some extent, how you play - if the increase in dps/heals/whatever is important to you, then changing your playstyle for the sake of a feeling of "progress" probably won't be that big a deal

but, if you want a feeling of progress AND you want to play whatever way you like, well then - you may have a harder time of it

and I'll be right there with you - I got tired of my stamina templar not feeling like a true heavy armor paladin (which is my favorite fantasy archetype), so I built an Imperial Heavy Armor Magicka Templar - cuz that's the way I want to play

he's terrible, from a meta standpoint - I'm not sure I could make a less optimized race/class/build style if I tried - but that's the way I want to play him, and I'll just have to suck it from a BIS/meta/leaderboard standpoint. Fortunately, I don't give half a rat's ass about leaderboards, so that's not really a downside for me

It always depends on your goal and intention why you're actually playing this game. For some of us it's just to have fun after a day of work with dear friends, for others it's about completion, meaning that they aim for achievements. And then there are the people who want to dominate the game, always aiming for the top of the leaderbords in any content PvP/PvE.

That being said it's about you to find something that you enjoy and maybe having the goal to become better at a specific thing in the game, be it pvp or PvE.

There is no right or wrong how to play your class, but rather an "Am I playing it the most efficient way" and that's the part where the meta kicks in.

If you want a generic number from my end you're doing good if you enjoy the game, might sit around 20-30k dps to complete most of the content(PvE) of the game.

But aiming for the higher grounds always comes with sacrifices like "No Michi, you can't play stamina in VaS+2, get a Magblade" Situations, which on the other hand can infact ruin your fun.

Most important will always be that you're happy when you log in and logout cuz you had a good time.
