Hips on Armor: Let's Get Serious

All right, developers: It seems pretty universal that the players absolutely hate those hip flaps on the armor.

Time to redesign them and make everyone happy.

What is it going to take?

I think hip flaps are to ESO what giant shoulders were to WoW.

Everyone hates them but we're used to it by now.

I just wear hip flapless armor (Abah's Watch).

Using a female character in ESO brings back a lot of WoW shoulder trauma

Ideally they would add a toggle in the outfit station, that would make everybody happy.

Agreed. We need toggles for hip flaps and crotch flaps. They're painfully tacky.

They started going in a good direction with the outfit pages (which you can buy with event tickets) that leaves many options for the future. We need more pages like that with simple pieces, like chest piece without flaps, invisible shoulders or very small ones, like the honour guard shoulders, unique weapons, and so on.

I started to give up on outfits, because I need to find a shoulder that is not ridiculous, a chest without huge floating flaps, belts, gloves, etc... and started using costumes more. To be honest I don't mind the flaps, but I dislike the ones that float. The flaps might give some protection for medium/heavy armor, but for robes, I don't see their purpose. You have crotch flaps for the redguard robe.. what is the point?

There are a few chest pieces that don't have those flaps, Order of the Hour is one, that also go with most every other armor out there. So, I use that.

I bet performance in Cyrodiil would improve if they didn't have to render those flipping flippity flaps.

    Nonono.. They serve a purpose.

Do you know how planes can fly slower when they land? They use flaps to extend wing size.

The armor flaps help to slow down the fall when we jump to the well or from a mountain so we dont die. The huge shoulders in WOW served the same purpose. They worked as wings.

Yes. I want an option to hide them if i so choose. Some like them so removal is not an option, but hiding them should be easy enough to make as they are separate from the armor itself.

Besides why cant we use the clothes we steal as a outfit style?

You seem to be driven to the direction ZOS wants. More bad options in outfit system sells more costumes.. Costumes are sometimes an option, but i dont find many of them very well done. Colors go to wrong places and they have too few color slots. 3 is not enough for a costume.

I am more bothered by strips that go down the middle and back. It's like I have a junk and butt flap just in case something goes wrong.

They are really annoying, I must say. They do not bother me a ton, but their removal would be welcomed. Or, at least, an option to hide them would be nice.

There are so many otherwise attractive pieces that we have to avoid because of these pieces. It really is a shame.

I would think that toggling them on and off would be more work for a re-design than simply eliminating them. Who wants them on? Anybody?

Does anyone here have any historical background who could tell us if any armor IRL ever had such hip flaps? Does it have any functional basis?

In terms of the crotch flaps, I can see a functional basis for them. When I first took tactical training over a decade ago there was firing with real guns but ammo replaced with wax-based bullets. The things left nasty bruises even through a few layers of clothing, and some even bled and left marks I could see a year later. Some of the gentlemen in the class wore towels hanging down from their belts and when I asked them why, they either turned red or outright guffawed and said something about "protection". And this was even with athletic protectors in place. Apparently the loose-hanging towel absorbed impact.

So -- even though they are ugly, and swing dangling in the breeze, perhaps the crotch flaps could be at least optional, at least on male characters...

They're not actually on the pants - even though they sit on the hips, so you would think they would be - they're a part of the chests.

Only hip flaps I quite like, so far, are the ones on the light, Dead-Water chest and that is only because they look more like pockets than floating hip guards.

In general, you need to be able to hide them, as you do belt buckles and shoulders.

usually the hip flap is off the chest piece, not the pants. I got pants that are fine. Its the chest pieces that bring in the flaps.

I wouldn't even mind them, if they weren't causing such obvious visual glitches.

Some clipping while mixing and matching different motifs is understandable, though not welcome; however, when parts belonging to the same motif are clipping with each other, it's obvious that something needs to change.

How hard could it be to give us a switch to make these flappy parts invisible? ;)

      Toggle would certainly be appreciated.

Personally I quite like them on my Imperial armour, but I only speak for myself, of course.

A toggle means that everyone wins.

The flaps are definitely part of the ESO standard style, as they appear even on the costumes. e.g.Ancestral-Homage-Formal-Gown-Female-Front.jpg?ssl=1
At least in the sewn-in cases, they don't float.

I've never understood why they're part of chest slot, and not waist. Doing the latter, and giving us a general "hide slot" in the outfit system could fix a lot of birds with one stone.
