How much does race matter for a casual player?

I was wondering about this one.

I simply don't have the time to aim for top-tier gameplay, and am currently looking for a casual guild, if such a thing exists? Going to go browse the PC EU recruitment forum after this post.

Basically, I have no intention of chasing leaderboards. I just want to go on adventures with friends, scores be damned.

With this in mind, do I need to worry about my race choice, or does not chasing the "top tier" as it were, relieve me of some requirements?

I'm genuinely none-the-wiser, so am hoping some one can put to rest my confusion.

Apologies for the n00bish' nature of my post. It is because I am one.

Nice. Well, I'm glad I can just pick races on how I plan out a story.

Like I say, no interest in min/maxing for competition anymore. Had enough of that on Xbox. I play on PC because I like a good laugh.

You can always change the race if you get to the point when it matters. Min/Max for vet endgame content like vMOL, for example

unless your'e doing score runs in trials and arenas, or looking to optimize a group for skin runs your race doesn't matter.

If you're running a high elf as a stamina damage dealer, or an orc as a magicka damage dealer, you'd probably notice some difference in effectiveness but not enough that it would put any of the content out of reach. And that's an extreme case.

If you look at the parse numbers that streamers have been doing with PTS, the difference between the TOP mag race and say, the 5th "best" mag race is a matter of 1-2%. Stam in the same scenario is just over 2%.

Very true, and in all likelihood I will eventually make a min/max character. Just one, probably DD as it's what I know best.

But I'm pleased to hear that it seems I can relax with my other characters.

Exactly friend. For the most part I simply have no interest in score runs. I'm in the game for an adventure. How "efficiently" that adventure was completed doesn't really bother me, hence me searching for a casual guild.

Yeah doesn't matter. The people who are worried about race changes are only worried about having the meta build for best dps, heals, tank. And even having the "BEST" is really only a small percentage better then the other. But I have seen a few test videos now and so far everything is really balance with the changes. At least for a magika race perspective but that's all I play so I haven't watched any testing for the more stamina oriented races.

If your not worried about meta then pick any race you like and have fun. Even if its not the "best" race for your build type the different in another race won't prevent you from doing end game content.

I have done many VET trail/ dungeons and never has anyone told me to leave because I was a Breton instead of an Altmer for my magdps classes.

If you're paying attention, tackling mechanics, and playing well, 9 times out of 10 people aren't even gonna notice your race TBH.

If you're standing around AFK, not trying, dying in red stuff repeatedly, spamming a totally worthless ability, and generally making little effort to be useful - that's when people are gonna stop and go, "UH LOLZ WHY U AN ORC SAUCEROR BRO"

No worries enjoy the game. ESO has one of the best community then any other MMO I have played. There are even guilds out there that just help new players with dungeons, gear, builds, etc. Sadly, as with most forums, you will see people complaining about every little thing on here and making small things seems like a big deal. So don't put to much into all the forums about how "This race will not be a loud to do anything anymore" BS.

Like Myself and Krayl are saying really it will not matter as long as you can play your class well and even if you can't there are people out their and guilds that love to help you learn so no stress :-).

I'm aware of how gaming forums work. I have over 21k posts on the Elite Dangerous forum. Only four people with more posts than me there.

I'm used to the complaining in gaming threads. Also see it on the Xbox activity feed.

    Just life really.

Doesn't matter at all unless you want to do the hardest possible content with groups. But you could even go into vet maelstrom arena with something like a high elf or breton stamina character and still complete it fine since your not worried about score and that is classed as very hard solo content so yeah no worries ^^

Aye. I cannot stress enough that I am not interested in scores, in the slightest. I like challenge of course, but I don't obsess over being the best.

I respect those who do want to be the best, in fact I fully support them in their endeavours and wish them luck.

But it's not for me. Quite happy to stay casual here.

Chose whatever you like and fits your intended gameplay, then. Keep in mind racial bonuses will change soon, so you do NOT want to pick a Bosmer to make a sneaky thief. To my great displeasure, alas, I might have to retire mine after more than 3 years of service.

If you're just going to casually adventure, pick what tickles your fancy, and maybe apply some basic common sense : if you're going to be some sort of magic user, maybe a race with magic bonuses... However, my wife has a nord sorceress that simply steamrolls enemies.

Due to the Nord's hardiness, she spends less time defending / evading, and more time actually punching them in the face with lightning fists. She hits like a milk-drinker, but most of the time it's enough :P

Given the objectives you are looking for, I think you are absolutely fine picking race for roleplay reasons. :)

I only play Bosmer for example. Been that way in the Elder Scrolls world since 2007 (Oblvion, Skyrim, ESO). My 'primary' characters are magplar healer, stamsorc bow/bow, magsorc dps. My 'secondary' characters are magblade dps, stamblade bow/bow and warden bow/bow. I don't care about Trials or DLC dungeons and have no performance concerns regarding any of my characters.

The effect was 10% damage, this might be lower in next update.
Also Dunmer and Khajiiit will work just as well in both roles in next update.

Healed most vet dlc dungeons on an khajiit.
No that is not impressive, the most famous tank in eso play as an Khajiit, no Khajiit will not be an tanking race after the update.

This is also why I don't play male characters a lot. :pensive:
Anyway, I don't care what changes they make to the Altmer or Templars, I'm not changing my character. I've flip-flopped on her name a few times though. I'm thinking of changing it again to something more Altmeric. It feels like a kick in the pants though to have to pay 2,500 crowns for a dang name change!

For most gameplay it won't matter.
The time it matters is if you want to do endgame dungeons/trials/PvP-type content. Then it really does make a big difference if you choose an Orc to play a magicka character (for example). None of the stamina races will have the same level of magic or magic sustain as the magicka-based races. (And visa-versa for the magicka races not being able to compete using stamina-based weapons and skills.)

Doesn't matter at all. Really it ONLY matters if chasing scores. Everyone else (whether you play for roleplaying, to immerse yourself in ES lore or just to have fun completing all the content in the game and collecting all the collectables) will be perfectly fine going with any race.

i think its not stressed enough so ill say it again.

if one day you get interested in vet content you can still do it no matter race/class.

the only disadvantage you will have is, scoreboards(obviously) but thats not even guaranteed. you can still be at top scores too.

when you get there youll understand. sincerely, a dunmer stamblade.

If you pick a race with bonuses that supports your preferred role/build you'll have a moderately easier time doing vet PvE content and PvP. As a new casual player lacking gear or bunch of CP, it's not entirely useless to get a minor buff from racials.

Race choice isn't noticeable when doing overland content though, because of how easy it is.

If you're not even sure if you wanna play stamina, magicka or tanky, than probably just pick a race you like based on lore+looks. Better than being worried and stuck at the character creation screen for days.

Thank you. See that was something I wasn't sure about. Would I be kicked for being the "wrong" race and all that jazz.

Even though I played on Xbox, I never really interacted with the community there, so this is all rather new to me.

I wouldn't play with a group who kicked me for being the "wrong" race and I certainly wouldn't join a guild that would not accept non-meta builds. With that said, there are progression groups/guilds out there that require meta builds or whatever they deem to be optimal.

Honestly, with all the outfits and armors, unless you are a Khajiit or Argonian, nobody is going to be able to see what race you are unless they are really trying. (I play on PS4, maybe there is an addon for PC that shows you what other players are, gear, etc.) Like others have said, most players care more about what you are doing, as in your rotation, wearing logical armor sets, learning mechanics, being where you are supposed to be in dungeons and trials. You can have a meta build, but if you are spamming Snipe in any trial, its time to go.

I mained a Nord stam DK for a while and he was fine in almost all content, including the Craglorn 3. Wasn't until I moved onto the DLC dungeons that I changed him to a Khajiit and moved closer to the meta. It does make a difference for that type of endgame content. A little here and a little there add up, especially when 11 other players are of similar mindsets.
