Returning player. One Tamriel question

Hey all. As the title says, I'm a returning player. I read with sinking heart the changes that One Tamriel has brought to the game so I decided to have a little test run to see how it played. I have run from Auridon to Greeshade and managed to kill every enemy I've come across (packs of three gave me some trouble) wearing nothing but my Soul Shriven rags and carrying the greatsword I was given at the start.
So, my question is;
If I don't intend to do group content overmuch, what's the point in all the more powerful armour and weapons if I can survive all the game's enemies with the equipment I have now? What's the point of spending time leveling and/or crafting better gear if I no longer need to? (I know, that was two questions)
A good deal of my fun with these type of games was derived from getting pwned by enemies more powerful than me and then obtaining the armour and weapons I needed to go back to them and deliver some much needed justice.
I'm not trolling or QQing per se. I'm just looking for a good enough reason to re-visit a game that I once enjoyed greatly and wish to again. Any helpful replies would be appreciated. Thanks.

run up to a world boss, or go enter a dungeon or delve. do anything other than regular mobs and you will see a need to find new gear.

you are buffed up greatly at level one 0 champion.

Do that again with a max level character with no skill point, attributes, or champion points assigned

Prior to One Tamriel, you were locked into content that was within 5 levels of you thanks to the artificial miss chance penalty.

Now, you can fight anything, but you are scaled to CP 160 along with all the opponents.

So you can't do what I did a long time ago. You can't fight Blaze and Ragebinder at level 9, fail, level up to 11, come back and kick their butts.

You can create artificial difficulty for yourself. As you level, your stats scale with your gear, so if you continue with low level gear and don't put in CP, you will find that the game gets harder.

Or you can level up properly and move on to harder opponents. World Bosses, Dungeons, and Trials are where you will actually find a challenge if getting better gear to beat harder opponents is what you want out of ESO.

This is the problem with One Tamriel no one seems to acknowledge...it has made overland content braindead easy. Keep running garbage gear though and it will get harder and harder the higher you level...but its on you to create a challenge now.

Overland content wasn't that hard before hand that I recall. It felt hard my first time through...because I didnt know about food buffs, a build, or even decent DPS. I struggled with Doshia because it took me until Coldharbor to realize I should bash the harvesters to interrupt them!

My second time through was much easier, so much so my stam sorc was going through quests several levels above my level, until I hit the artificial miss chance penalty. The game itself prevented me from handling harder content until I leveled up.

In other words, sure, overland content is easy now. I just dont think it was ever that great to begin with and the impression of difficulty was more due to my inexperience.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think I'm going to go with creating my own difficulty by keeping my gear low and then pretending that I'm not It's seems like the only way to get an experience sort of like what I previously enjoyed.

Indeed. The low level character has a lot of Stat power and can do a lot with junk gear. Fortunately as you level the gear value drops rapidly so your gear you collect and use becomes somewhat useful again.

You will need good gear soon enough. As soon as you hit CP level your Stats drop quite a bit.

Don't forget that prior to One Tamriel keeping balanced with the content meant not doing any DLCs until you had reached level 50, otherwise the xp you got from a DLC would leave you over-leveled when you returned to the base game - and even without doing the DLCs you would find your alliance zones trivial (and the mobs grey to you) by the third or fourth zone. Now you have complete freedom to do any of the content at any time.

Instead of just killing overland mobs you can do harder content like killing bosses from quests, delves, public dungeons, or even world bosses. You can still solo them without needing a group. You can also try vma if want a solo challenge.

VMA = the Veteran mode of Maelstrom Arena. Maelstrom Arena can be entered from Wrothgar.
