Activity finder sucks

Im a solo player and always want to farm gear sets from dungeons but never can due to the fact activity finder never finds me a game. Ive tried dps and ive tried selecting healer. Healer occasionally gives me a game but this is annoying. Surely the player base of this game are gueing aswell. Something must be wrong with it

The only problem here is that there are of course too many DDs so when you select DD you of course need to wait longer. In case you are good enough to solo dungeons you could give it a try, or make a healer or a tank. Easier to farm this way

With such little information it is hard to know what may help you.

Since you are farming for gear you should be queueing for normal difficulty for starters, unless you are farming for monster helms. That would offer you the fastest queue and considering the number of fake tanks it should pop fast, especially when you are a healer.

Second, even as a solo player there is no reason to avoid a guild. There area good social guilds that have no requirements other than you have logged in during the past few months. It is always easier to get a group going that way, or through Zone. If you form it via a guild they might give you whatever drops.

As others have said DPS tend to have long wait times due to the shear number of them in conjunction with fewer healers and tanks. The time of day you are trying to get a group can also have an effect on queue times. Believe it or not I've found queue times tend to be shorter when there are a medium number of players logged in. From my experience low and heavy player populations have a negative effect on queue times. A low population while having lower DPS queuing also reduces the chance of getting healers and tanks. Having a lot of players increases the size of the DPS queue. So you might look at when you are trying to queue and see if trying at a different time reduces your queue time.

I don't let the wait time bother me. I use it to do my crafting dailies, run the Undaunted delve, run other misc. dailies, max my daily thefts and use my treasure maps/surveys. If I run out of this stuff there is always housing or gathering. In general I use the queue time to do all of the other stuff I like to complete when playing.
