How to solo/small-scale Stamplar in Cyrodiil

YohanZo
YohanZo
Hey guys

I just love how the Stamplar looks and feels in PvP, but I know for sure it's not the strongest and it's not a popular solo/small-scale choice. I would guess that it's probably one of the harder classes to master. I have some good beginner experience with the class, being at rank 20/50.

I feel the class has very good burst if you can line up your PoL rotation and jab while your enemies are stunned. We have good survivability in stationary fights with cleanse, protection and mending.

My main issue with it is mobility and control in outnumbered battles. I believe the Stamplar lacks the built in mobility toolkits that somes classes have like nightblade or sorcerer.

So I would like to know how you guys compensate for this mobility and control weaknesses on Stamplar?
What weapon combinations and skills do you use? What sets can be helpful and so forth...

Someone used cowards backbar with SNB. If you use channeled focus, you can use race against time. Bow backbar. I

If you use a huge WD set like ravaging or automaton already, there's a case for using steed mundas with the above options.

I think speed outside sources is good. Just need to practice reposition since we don't havea proactive defense like warden.

Never tried cowards on back before, so might give it a go. But dropping restoring focus is like dropping 500 stamina recovery... I don't think that's a good idea since the murkmire buff.

Stamplar has a higher skill cap than most classes, but got much easier with the recent changes to the rune. Still, the speed pot nerf hurt it worse than any other class. Channeled acceleration is imo the best way to get mobility without gimping your gear, and can be run in place of repentance now that the sustain can be covered elsewhere. I think 2h/dual wield (with Master DW either front or back bar) or 2h/sword and board are the best options as far as weapons go.

When it comes to controlling fights, you don’t have the best means for proactive damage mitigation/healing to control fights with defensively. Instead, on Stamplar offense is defense and you control fights through aggression. You wanna get really good at delivering damage and build to do so. Overwhelming opponents with pressure is how you control fights as a Stamplar.

To that extent, Jabs is the heart and soul of the class. My favorite skill and why I love Templar. The awesome thing about Jabs is, it’s not just a point and click ability- as much as people who die to it might claim its a mindless spam of a skill. There’s very much so a technique to landing jabs, which involves positioning and maintaining momentum in a fight to get the most out of the channel. The best Templars land their Jabs much more effectively than the rest. Beyond just that though, a critical component of Templar (both stamina and magicka) is properly lining up burst. Simply spamming Jabs will not kill anyone decent, nor will it get you kills in an optimal fashion. Rather, you wanna use Jabs in conjunction with your Ultimate, DoTs, and select class burst facilitators (PoTL on Stamplar, Total Dark and Purifying Light on Magplar) to set up massive damage combos. It will just take time and experience to get a good feel for it, but as a general rule of thumb for any class, the tighter you can pack your burst window the better.

Many good points have been said already, maybe you like to have a look at gryphons ferocity, too. The weapon crit as well as weapon damage will help alot and the 5 piece bonus offers a nice little extra push in fights. + its farmable if you own the chapter / available at guild traders (hard to get bc of level, tho). While I suppose you are not using monster sets yet (its kind of a waste to go farm for them at below level 50) try to get the jewellery and/or weapons to have the option of going medium armor as well as heavy armor.

Try both armor types, maybe you find someone to craft 2 sets of hundings rage in impenetratable for you, one heavy one medium. (If you happen to play on EU feel free to PM me for that). Medium armor offers more damage, but tends to be squishy especially when at lower levels without all passives unlocked. Due to more resistance Heavy armor is more viable in PVP - hence, you may live long enough to understand what your opponent did to kill you (and learn PVP). I started PVP at level 10 without options like kyne, but Mobs high above my level so in the very beginning I had to run heavy in order to survive encounters with wolves and alike and later vet 5 / vet 10 NPCs. The transition to medium armor was hard for me (its a very different playstile). So, I really would recommend to try both for some weeks, in heavy you will learn more about staying alive in cyro, in medium you probably have the better chances to kill something. ;)

Since you are not at max level yet you may want to focus on leveling aedric spear abilities (I remember unlocking balanced warrior really helped in PVP), as you will probably use them more frequently then other skill lines. PotL from mages wrath skill line and restoring focus as well as purify from restoring light skill line are good to have as well. Vigor from alliance skill line is mandatory, tbh, get it asap (and put those attribute points you used for magica in order to use heal skills back to your stamina attributes!).

Else its the usual stuff, don't forget food and drinks. Keep your gear up to level and in good state. Find a guild that offers groupactivities in cyrodiil and don#t forget to PVE in order to get that much needed skillpoints unlocked. ;)

edit: ... and see you on the battlefield! (more or less: Soon)

Have you tried prisoner’s? It’ll reduce your sprint cost and give back a pretty substantial amount of magicka while sprinting/kiting. Which in turn will allow you to purge more often.

Thanks for the detailed reply. But didn't you mean race against time? Channeled acceleration has an awkward cast animation, though it is 3 times the duration...

And thanks for all the other tips

LMAO thanks for the detailed reply m8. But I meant I am PvP rank 20/50 not level 20 XD.

Sounds great, wonder if you pair this with race against time if sprint cost would be 0%.....

No, I meant Channeled Acceleration. The cast time can be dealt with, and you gain major protection while casting it. This morph gives you more time with expedition, but more importantly 30+ seconds of minor force is a huge damage amp. Especially on a class that natively gets major savagery.

I’ve been absolutely loving Stamplar since Murkmire, it’s safe to say it’ll be my main for the forseable future. Honestly I haven’t had trouble with mobilty. If you’re smart about how and where you fight it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Speed pots are still useful if you don’t expect too much from them. You can also run something like deaths wind backbar and your damage set frontbar. This leaves you able to soak up quite a bit of damage even in medium, combined with bloodspawn. Between that, the psijic ult and purge and vigor you should be pretty well covered when kiting. Shuffle is still a huge pain point imo though. Stamplar is and can be incredibly bursty but it’s also about patience. I think the tools are there you just need to experiment more with weapon setups, and maybe builds, as well as resource management. And also be aware that being outnumbered is really hard these days. A lot of classes like Stam wardens/NBs provide massive amounts of burst and debuffs with little effort, and of course permafrost, time stop and the numerous CC and snare bugs and lag take it beyond skill into an RNG realm where sometimes you’re blessed with good performance and other times you get chewed up no matter what you do.

I’d like to try that skill, but idk that I could give up repentance for it.

Also don’t discount quick cloak as a great mobilty tool for stamplar which is passively adding damage to PoL even if it’s not a lot. Works well if you go DW backbar and 2H frontbar. If you decide to go ravager front bar, you can run deaths wind backbar DW for extra restiances and just have rending and quick cloak, vigor, rune and purge.

I’ve been enjoying steadfast back bar and cyro ward up front. Bloodspawn on my melon. Pretty much only in BGs so far. My workaround for lack of mobility is using silver leash instead of javelin. Gives a little boost to wpn dmg as well.

Do you still use Shuffle with this setup? Been thinking about trying Blockrose DW using Quick Clock, just need to farm it.

The biggest thing for me is picking where to fight. Unless they are totally garbage players, it's almost impossible to face tank 2-3 average or better players on stamplar. Damage is too high, and the loss of 100% minor protection sucks.

Personally, I hate the rune changes. I'll take back the 2 minor buffs we lost 100% uptime on any day over the added sustain.

No I traded out shuffle for this. It’s okay, it requires a bit different playstyle and it’s really easy to want that ME all the time so you keep spamming QC and run out of stam. But shuffle is such trash these days that the small amount of immunity you get makes the trade totally doable. Plus QC can continue procing whatever glyphs you’re using on DW even after you bar swap.

Agreed. I run channeled and the cast time hasn't been much of an issue. The buff is so long you don't need to cast it often and you can often use LOS to put yourself in a position to recast.

For a class that has the ability to stack crit damage I feel like channeled is a must. Plus the speed buff is really nice too. Helps mitigate the mobility nerf from pots.

Overall I have found stamplar to be really effective in group play. Our group doesn't usually have a healer so the purifies come in huge when fighting outnumbered. Plus POL offers a fairly unique debuff and can act as an effective means of highlighting a target for the group to focus on. This coupled with the change to repentance makes them quite useful. Only thing missing is AOE burst like you can get from a stamden which is unmatched on the stamina side.

Depends on race. I have actually been mostly on Magplar and now Mag Sorc this patch, but you really dont need more than 1300-1400 regen these days for Stamplar. I was able to 1vX fine with 1500 regen in Wolfhunter before getting that amazing rune buff which equates to 480 stam regen.
