Do you change your build with each new update?

I am quite curious what other people do with their character when a big update hits. Do you change your specs and gear to the new most optimal version, or do you keep your character as it is?

Not usually. If the nerfs are really bad I end up parking some characters till a fix comes along. My Templars were parked for about 1.5 years.

Now for the most part my Mag Sorcs are parked.

Each update, with its attendant nerfs, simply seems to make my game less fun so my response is to ponder whether it is finally time to move on.

I may adjust some skills or armor if i have it, but I dont have the time to re roll another character from the beginning to get to where I'm at now. I would rather just wait until magblade or magsorc gets a buff and play defense lol.

I do sometimes, if the changes will have a significant impact--but if my current build works OK, I'll keep it as is, even it means losing a bit of damage, while passively gathering new sets. The problem with the gear farming in each patch is that by the time you are finished with gathering all the pieces, it's almost time for the next patch, and you have to farm again for the new meta (at least if you are like me and not have the best RNG) so it can get a bit ridiculous

Sometimes I change, and sometimes don't
Most of the time the changes dont have enough of an impact to warrant changing a build for me. The one exception was the recent change to Nightblade Refreshing Path. The only reason I had it was for the heals, without that it is worthless.

I keep my character as it is
My characters are characters - the way I build them is governed by who they are, which is a very different standard than the competitive gaming scene. The changes the developers make to combat mechanics in this game rarely impact me in any substantial way, so there is just no need to change out skills and the like. That said, while I'm hardly a power gamer, I won't slot abilities for my characters that are just plain bad or inefficient. A good test of "this skill needs looked at" is when someone like me won't slot it even if it fits the character concept.

For example, take the destruction staff skill "impulse." There are a couple characters I liked to use this on because it fit their character, but the skill was so expensive for what it did and just didn't feel very effective. I hadn't used the skill on my lightning mage in a long time, but the damage got increased last patch so it made its way back on to his standard setup. I like the skill now, and it's fun to use on him.

Most new patches also bring new gear sets. Occasionally, I will get really excited about a new gear set because it fits one of my characters much better than what they are currently wearing. Gryphon's Ferocity did that for me when it dropped, and my speed demon Bosmer archer just loves it! Unfortunately, most sets in the game are functionally inaccessible to me and I don't even look through them when the patch notes drop. That means few changes with characters for gear, too.

Other than swapping out a few glyphs, I usually leave my builds alone. Now, the Summerset update with 2 slots for weapons did cause me to change some of my characters, as you can't pass up 5+5+2.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I've been running what I call the "bitter build", which is a build I made years ago and I'm bitter that it doens't work anymore. I have newer builds but there ALL bases on speed and targeting exploits and I just feel like a jackass using them. Very few players have builds that can finish a fight without some kind of kiting and running away to heal, and I find that just dumb.

I have 15 characters 'optimised' for multiple roles with various sets. Generally i may change a trait or two or perhaps get a new set for a character's primary role. But if im not playing that character heaps i wont do somthing like retrait from nirn/infused to infused/infused.

On my magdk. Before destro counted as 2pc I was dw then switched to destro. Then when murkier came and nerfed healing ward I had to go S&B back bar instead of resto which just because now to survive I have to turtle up more and can't stay offensive. Turtling up and spamming DB is isn't even that good but still better than nerfed healing ward and it's boring gameplay.but zos in the treating balancing ideas nerf the main surviability tools for light armor on a patch they where suppose to make it light armor a better choice

I'm generally trying specs that are supposed to perform well judging by the PTS if I have a character suitable for it, but in the end I go with what works best for me, and that isn't always the meta.

So far magblade was a go before Murkmire. Tried stamblade before Summerset, but it ended up being worse than my magsorc, so I stuck with the sorc back then. Tried making one of my DKs WW in wolfhunter, but it simply wasn't even close to any of my other DDs, so I abandoned that project. I did level an Argonian DK specifically to tank trials though about a year ago, because my magplar tank (that is now a DD), that had been my main since 2015, didn't cut it any more with all the nerfs. I'm glad my magplar made a comeback this patch, even if not as a tank.

Having a small army of alts helps :D

I change it not because I want to move to something "optimal," but because I have to since the nerfs continue to push players towards even less build variation. The game actually seems extremely boring to me, especially since now you really don't have many options even in PvP...

I use old sets. But if something new appeals to me I'll try it out. Because it's new and exciting, not because the meta changed. ZoS kind of encourages my playstyle, as my dps passively went up during the last few updates, without tweaking anything.

It depends on the update really. But I often changes builds a ton as it is, so sometimes it is hard to keep track of whether I changed a build due to a specific balance change, a new set, or a whim I had one afternoon.

My character is always the same ... But I will tweak sets, CP and skills and even potions with each update

Some time it's a skill morph change other it's a total swap out

Sets maybe just a glyph change or a trip to a transmute station , other patches it's a dungeon trip to farm new gear

All depends on my needs and how much irksome something has become

If you build for stats, there is virtually no reason to change your build from a PvP perspective.

If not the for the stat loss of vMA and Arena weapons in general, Hundings/Julianos + Agility/Willpower would still be extremely competitive. They still are now to an extent. Far from BiS but you can 100% compete with any PvP build outside of the pure cheese stack.

Depends if the nerfs ruin my build or not, if I dont lose significant survival and or dps from it, I wont.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.
