No free crates for new crate season ??

I am sure that the number of free crates are tied to crate sales. The free crates are intended to get you started with Crown Crates. As they dial back on the free crates, players are expected to pick up the difference in the Crown Store.

✭✭✭✭✭Giving away free crates is a marketing promotion - the idea is that having tried them for free you discover you really like them and/or really want some of the items included and then buy more.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if that didn't happen, it might even have backfired and lead to lower crate sales as players wait to see how many they can get for free before buying any and then forget about the stuff they really wanted/can't log in to get it at the end of the season.
It makes no sense (from a business perspective) to keep running a marketing promotion which isn't producing a good return on investment.
It's like complaining that the coffee place you'd go to just for the free espresso they gave out has stopped doing that because they worked out most people were only coming in for the free samples and never actually buying anything.
(Which means I'm disappointed too that they seem to have heavily cut back or stopped giving free crates, but I'm not surprised it happened because it always seemed clear to me this was intended to make more money for ZOS and if that's not happening they have no incentive to keep doing it.)PC EU player | She/her/hers | PAWS (Positively Against Wrip-off Stuff) - Say No to Crown Crates!

✭Most likely ZOS was losing money on giving out free crates so they stopped it. Why buy them when they were giving them out for free. I know that was the only time I got crates when they were free.6 -

If I like what a season offers, I get 1 pack of 15 crates each time, and that's it. Free crates on top of that are just a bonus. I was not a fan of what last season had to offer, so frankly I'm just glad that there's a season with decent stuff again.0 -

I've not bought crates either, but I only have 17 gems 'cuz I bought all the exclusive stuff from the crates that I'd missed out on from not buying them. I might have had that many if I'd never cashed any of them in.
Which leads to the point others have made. The free crates probably weren't generating new sales from players who'd never purchased before and were also probably cutting into the sales from their regular purchasers, since they were getting so many free gems and items without having to spend as much money.
Remember, crates are designed to get players to spend money. They are not designed to give you what you want at a reasonable price.
ETA: I liked getting free crates and will miss them, but I don't fault ZOS at all for not giving them out any more. They are under no obligation to do so, just because that had done so in the past. It may be that we'll see some crates in future daily rewards, but perhaps not. We all seem to forget that we're getting a LOT of free stuff from the daily rewards. Sure, most of it is filler, but we got a DLC last month, several pets, a costume, and now a mount this month (in addition to a couple of hats). They don't have to give us anything. Also, we all seem to forget the free pet, mount, and house we got not too long ago (sure it was a promotion, blah, blah blah...).Edited by Jayne_Doe on December 5, 2018 6:46PM0 -

I have not purchased Crowns in almost a year now (Dec 21, 2017) and am not seeing a reason to do it in the future. I am still an ESO Plus subscriber, which is largely why I do not need to buy Crowns.
I don't subscribe for Crowns. I don't subscribe for Crown Crates, and have never considered them to be a benefit of ESO Plus. I am also not that interested in the new Crown Store "opportunities" that they have introduced. For me, any special tie-in with the Crown Store for ESO Plus is largely a wasted effort, unless the deal is compelling. That means FREE or at a silly low price.
Free crates only interest me to the point of collecting them. I don't care about Crown Crates beyond that. People ask me if I am going to record the grand opening of them, some day. In typical ZOS-speak, I have no plans to open them at this time. Once I open them, I can never get them back. Besides, my nearly 300 Crown Crates represent almost 300 Apex mounts. I don't need 300 Apex mounts.

They probably are hoping to bait people in to blowing their Christmas money on crates and so they don't want people holding out for free ones.0 -
