DLC

I'm considering buying DLC. Started a couple months ago with an old pre-Morrowind game and bought Summerset (CE for $26 on sale - now it's $14 two months later?). CP 200+.

- The best way seems to buy ESO+ for crowns? Glancing at the sale on today, it seems like about 10,000 is a nice amount, or 6 months of ESO_ for about $80. More than I'd intended to spend, but there you go.

- Is there a ranking of DLC worth buying? I like to play pve, not pvp.

- Morrowind and Thieves Guild - which I started - seem like pretty clear picks.

- Is some DLC better to own, and other DLC fine to just 'play once' and you don't need it? That's a sort of catch 22 about the ESO+ situation - buy it to get crowns to buy DLC, but then you get the DLC with ESO+, so do you still want to own it after ESO+?

- More casual play - not 'end game get all the best stuff'.

- No need for Dark Brotherhood - not really into killing innocent people. So leaning against the 4-pack, given the current sale on each item in it.

My personal favourite is Orsinium. Haven't actually had a chance to finish it yet but the area is beautiful and the story so far seems good

From what I've heard it's Orsinium, then Morrowind, then thieves guild for the skill line & Summerset for skill line and jewellery crafting.

I just bought Summerset tho & got the others with ESO+

If you get ESO+, even if only for one month, you have access to all the dlc. You have a chance to look at the dlc and judge for yourself if any are worth buying so you have access even after you drop ESO+.

I sub, and I used the crowns from the sub to buy the dlc I wanted to keep access to in the event I had to drop my sub for any reason.

    Story/area DLC are
    (Thieves Guild
    Dark Brotherhood)
    Orsinium
    Morrowind
    Clockwork City
    Murkmire.
Imperial City is weird but mostly PvP anyway.

Of those (and leaving out TG/DB), I'd rank them
Orsinium, Morrowind, (swap those around if you've played TES3:MW), CWC, Murkmire.
The others are pure dungeon DLC, containing two dungeons each (harder than base-game), so I'd not recommend them.

Considering the parameters you laid out, I recommend

    (1) Orsinium: Chapter-sized content from the time before Chapters.
    - Lots of area to explore
    - Multiple delves and World Bosses and two Public Dungeons
    - Lots of skill points
    - Beautiful environment
    - Great main quest line
    - Maelstrom Arena if you change your mind about end-game gear
    - Excellent gear sets
    - Six repeatable daily quests; two motifs

    (2) Morrowind: the first Chapter
    - Not as much exploration as Orsinium, but still a lot
    - Multiple delves and World Bosses and two Public Dungeons
    - Halls of Fabrication Trial if you change your mind about end-game content
    - Original source of Warden Class, but not sure how that class is packaged now
    - Three cool houses if you get into that content
    - Four repeatable daily quests and four motifs
    - Morrowind style furnishing plans and enhanced pickpocket drops
    - Good main quest and several good side quest lines
    - Good gear sets

    (3) Thieves Guild
    - Skill line very useful for nearly all game content
    - It's a mini-zone, so light on amount of exploration, but what it has is rich
    - Maw of Lorkhaj Trial if you change your mind about end-game

Any other DLCs, I'd consider the dungeons, the gear, and the motifs that they include to decide on which to buy and in what order.

    Quality quest-wise, I'd rank them :
    Morrowind
    Clockwork City
    Orsinium
    Thieves Guild
    Summerset/Murkmire/Dark Brotherhood (haven't played them)

But that's not the chronological order the quests were originally intended to be played.

Depending on where you live, you might find the Gold Edition on amazon for pretty cheap - cheaper than the crown store (though with the sales going on - this day is the last ! - that may be arguable). The Gold edition is basically the crown store "Guilds and Glory" pack (orsinium, imperial city which is pvp, dark brotherhood and thieves guild).
PC/EU - PVE 2H stam orc petsorc (meta, what meta?) ww - terrible dps - mediocre player - fun times - free ww bites to whomever asks so don't be shy if interested

Thinking further considering you are balancing subscription commitment versus DLC purchasing

Clockwork City is a strong contender. The main quest is perhaps the best in the game in terms of role-playing and traditional fantasy story-telling. Hauntingly beautiful and sublime. The writer(s) did a splendid job. The art - from setting to innovation to detail - is amazing. My impression is that the artists were given free rein to unleash their creative genius. The art is other-worldly, as a fabricated realm should be, yet it is firmly anchored in the Elder Scrolls universe.

You get the Asylum Sanctorum Trial for end-game if you change your mind about end-game weapons.

However, for me, it definitely falls into the 'play once' or twice category. It's a mini-zone, but it seemed to have the least amount of exploration game-play. There are four repeatable daily quests and two World Bosses, but the non-WB dailies were the sort of step-n-fetch quests that you just want to hurry to get done.

If you have extra money to spend and are in the mood to spend it on an immersive experience, Clockwork City is the hands-down choice.

Story/open-world DLC - ones with a (relatively) big map to explore, story quests, side-quests and other activities you'd expect in a normal map
    Orsinium
    Thieves Guild
    Dark Brotherhood
    Morrowind
    Clockwork City
    Murkmire

Dungeon DLC - these are literally just pairs of dungeons, you could play them using ESO+ or skip them entirely if you're not interested in dungeons
    Shadows of the Hist
    Horns of the Reach
    Dragonbones
    Wolfhunter

PvP focused DLC with limited PvE content
    Imperial City

If you're willing to spend that much in one go 6 or 12 months of ESO+ is currently the cheapest way to buy crowns. Normally I'd suggest subscribing and using that time to try all the DLC so you can choose the ones you want, but I assume you're looking to buy some during the current sale. The alternative is to subscribe continuously, or to subscribe again whenever you want to get into a DLC map. Personally I prefer to pay once and then have them forever, but if you like the other ESO+ benefits it might be worth keeping a subscription going.

Based on what you've said I think Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Morrowind, Clockwork City and Murkmire are all good choices. I'd suggest considering Dark Brotherhood too, there is a lot of stuff to do without joining the Brotherhood (including a short quest chain that ties into the overall story).

Thanks. I should mention I got Murkmire in the daily reward.

So we're looking at Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Morrowind and Clockwork City. Those and a banker, all on sale, come to the 10000 crowns you get for 6 months ESO+.

So, the other question, are any of these ok to not buy to own forever, and just play in ESO+? If so, that'd leave a few crowns for purchases on other things like upcoming DLC.

I hadn't wanted to spend $80 (plus original game plus $26 on Summerset), but it's a great game to spend some on.

My normal inclination would be to go slower, but the sale does encourage 'getting it now'. (Was surprised to see the $26 sale price two months ago on Summerset CE drop to $14 now). But no one has suggested a better approach, so this seems it.

If you plan on keeping ESO+ as long as you play this game, all are ok to not buy tbh. I did end up buying three myself, but that was only 'cos I wasn't sure if I was going to keep ESO+ at the time.

Based on current crown payouts, if you think you will finish a DLC in one month and you don't think you will return to the zone after, it makes more sense to just sub for a single month, finish that DLC, and pocket the crowns for a future DLC purchase (or combine with the free crowns from leveling to make the purchase).

Regarding Summerset, it was released in April and there is a good chance that it will be included in ESO+ by around the same time next year when a new chapter drops. Also, Summerset doesn't seem to have anything that would make sense to sell separately like the Warden class did. It is hard to imagine them selling the Psijic skill line separately like the Warden class. It might make the most set to ignore Summerset until you have played though all other content if you plan to have ESO+.

One thing to keep in mind is that crafting surveys drop only for the large DLC/chapters zones (Wrothgar/Vvardenfel/Summerset). Apart from illustrating that Wrothgar is in the same class of content as the other two despite the creation of the new category "chapter," it might become annoying if you do a lot of crafting and you keep getting surveys for those three (though you could hold on to them for free ESO+ events if you don't sub).

I'd say that depends on how you like to play ESO.

If you're the type to complete a zone all in one go (not one day, but focusing just on that when you are playing) and then not go back unless you want to run a new character through it then you could probably complete some/all of them during a 6 month subscription. Whereas if you like to play slowly or skip between content, or simply like knowing you can go back whenever you want (and you're not planning to subscribe continuously) then it's better to own them.

Of the four you listed I'd suggest Clockwork City as the one that could most easily be played with ESO+. It's smaller than Morrowind or Orsinium. Thieves Guild is smaller than Clockwork, but it has a skill line which can be useful (even if your character isn't specifically a thief) and allows access to Thieves Troves in all maps.

I agree with Danikat. Play Clockwork while your ESO+ subscription is active and purchase Thieves Guild

Thanks. The Thieves Guild is interesting, I played that during the trial week and now my chars can open troves. I expect my thief char can max thieves guild in ESO+ and I"m not sure what owning the DLC would offer after that?

Ah, I was under the impression that you already had bought Thieves Guild.
No, both Thieves Guild (and Dark Brotherhood) are really strong contenders for playing them once, maxing the skill line (TG passives can be useful, still not sure about DB) and then leaving them be.
    IMHO. :)

First, the DLCs with anniversary events have a sale on that DLC when it happens.

So waiting for the next DLC to have an event would save you the biggest bucks. Not all have had events though.

Beyond that it is what you are interested in. Thieves guilds is one I would pair with Dark Brotherhood, but it is not required to have both at the same time.
