Portal at the end of a dungeon

This seems bass ackwards to me... after I complete a dungeon, there's no way out and I have to run all the way back through to the entrance, where I find a portal, which taks me back to the far reaches of the dungeon only to make me run all the way out again.

That's crazy! Shouldn't the portal appear at the end of the dungeon, making it easy to get back to the entrance/exit? Or am I just not seeing the purpose of these portals?

The portal in some of them are so a player joining the group can port to the group. Saves time when a member disconnects and doesn't come back. Some dungeons have a back door you can exit. Others have a portal you go through to get back to the quest giver to turn in your quest.

If you are with a group just leave group and it will remove you from the dungeon and put you back to where you were right before you ported in.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."
