What's the point of having to wait 24 hours each time you upgrade your horse? Why can't you do it all at once if you have the gold?

That was the old daily log in incentive before daily log in rewards were a thing.

I wouldn't be opposed to buying all lessons (or remaining lessons if you'd started) at once, even if it took the same amount of time. Would still save you a TINY bit of time in the end since it's not feasible to log in exactly 20 hours later every time.

But it will never happen because then you might not get annoyed/impatient enough to buy crown riding lessons.

This "time delay content" has been around since the beginning of the game when there was no cash shop. So it's definitely not for that. Why it was implemented, I do not know. But I can definitely say that it wasn't implemented for that.

Myself and others have made multiple threads/polls asking for a change on this especially since PvP is horrible if you’re mount isnt at least 40 speed, it doesn’t feel like you can really stay ahead of map changes until you’re pretty near maxed out. But you’d be surprised how many RPG heroes come in and nay say any changes that reduce the nauseating grind aspects of the game. Somehow it doesn’t compute that other people don’t want to level mounts on 14 different toons.

It is 20 hours and for whatever reason it was to lengthen the upgrade time. Originally we could only upgrade 50x. If we wanted all speed we did not get any bag space.

For now it remains because we have the choice to get instant training via the crown store. So basically Zos does not have an incentive to make it easier for us to train via gold.

you are not upgrading your mount - you are upgrading your characters riding skills.

An time sink to get you to log in more often, same with research.

What they need to do is make it once off for all characters. When it's lvl'd on one character all other characters are auto set to max speed etc. Like they have done with the outfit styles and other things.

The worst thing about starting a new character is re-upgrading the mounts speed. 60 days is a freaking long time, when getting a character to lvl 50 can be done in less than a week.

Then u have a character that is lvl 50 with 4 mount speed, and NPC's are able to walk faster than you when u are moving at max speed on a mount.

When I took my bowsorc to Cyrodiil to get VigorCaltrops she was already built with full horse speed and things went fine. I took my young bowblade to Cyrodiil early (~10 in horse speed) because of a double XP event and there was a huge diff. She found a nice keep capturing group but struggled to keep up (even with the make my horse go faster Alliance skill). She usually arrived at resources after the fight was over (missing out on the xp). Keep fights were long enough so she got there in time but it still convinced me never to go there without 60 horse speed.

Kids these days... How about if it were possible to gain only one character level per 20 hours? Quite frankly, I don't see why one should be able to attain max level in just a few days. Where's the accomplishment in that? Krhm, "now I remember when I was a fledgling MMO player"... ;)

It used to be like this, then some smart a$$ @ Zenimax decided to make it individual training for each character.
  • silvermistktralasub17_ESO
Actually, no. Each person';s horse was different, but also each person's separate horses trained differently. So, if you owned multiple horses on the same character, each one might have different stats. And not all characters had access to the horse (unless you had imperial edition, where all characters had access to the imperial horse--but different 'skill level' on each one, depending on how you'd trained it.

I've played since Beta, so I am well aware of how it works. I also have all 15 characters having maxed horse training without me buying riding books directly (sometimes they came in a larger bundle I bought, but not otherwise). Considering that that 15th slot for the account came last spring, and I had her maxed in all of them before September, I figure maxing them the hard way is not really a problem.

Just be happy they changed it to training your character, and not actual horse training anymore.

When the game was released the horses that were for sale in game had different stats and you had to train each horse your character had. So if you bought the cheap horse all stats started at 0 to be raised to 60. If you saved up (and gold was much harder to get back then too) you could get the expensive horse that would have 10 spots already trained up and only had to get 50/60/60. Found a new horse that you wanted cause it looks so much better than the one you have? Start training it as the new horse doesn't have your old horse stats carry over. ( sickly enough I sometimes miss that the horses were different and had different stats)

You could, iirc, only max one stat. If you wanted speed, you spent 42700 gold and bought the "light horse" that started with 10 points of speed, and fed it nothing but apples. If you wanted inventory space, you spent 42700 gold and bought the "draft horse" that started with 10 points in slots, and fed it nothing but oats. You wanted stamina, you spent 42700 gold and bought the "gaited horse" that started with 10 points in stamina and fed it nothing but hay. The other stats stayed at the starting level. If you fed the wrong food, you'd never get that stat to 60. Oh, and you started with only one slot for a mount. You could own more than one horse, but you had to buy the additional slots before you bought the additional horses. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Riding_Skill

Dumb mechanic is dumb - and yes the mechanic at launch was worse, and yes the reason was to have a hook to keep people logging in day after day (and thus keeping a sub pre-B2P), but just like the atrocious inventory system, it was never improved as doing so would be tough to monetize, while it is easy for them to monetize work arounds like riding training and craft bag.

    Why?

Because MMOs have always been about timesinks.

Timesinks gave people a need to stay subscribed for longer, back when sub was required.
Timesinks gave something to occupy players between new content releases.
Timesinks give the cash shop opportunities for "tax on the impatient & foolhardy" grind-skip items.

Timesinks of all kinds. Raising faction reputations, doing weekly-lockout raids, farming recipes & item sets, farming <insert rare item here>, training skills, dailies, etc. MMO and Timesink have been traditional buddies for decades.
