Looks like I made a big mistake how I bought ESO

I owned the base game from years ago and hadn't played.

So in the recent sale, I had a choice - for about $40, I could either buy the Morrowind/base game for $10 and Summerset CE for nearly $30, or I could buy the 'black box' with standard game/Morrowind/Summerset and all DLC. I didn't want to get ESO+.

So, it was a choice between the Summerset CE bonuses - mainly a nice mount and pet - or all the DLC. The mount and pet looked nice so I got the CE instead of the DLC.

Now playing - and even if I want a nice mount, the recent promotion included one so this is mostly for one nice pet - I realize the DLC is nice to have, and priced it out. Looks like 21000 crowns, which is $150!

So, I have a $150 pet if I were to buy that. That basically sucks.

It's hard to see the best way to get the DLC now. Even with a black Friday sale I heard about, if crowns were half off, that'd still be $75. Make more sense to re-buy the game and Summerset to get that black box next time it goes on sale for $40 just to get the DLC, making it a $40 pet.

Just googled a little, and it looks like there wasn't even a Crown sale black friday, and when there was one it was 20%-30%.

Ya, looks like an expensive mistake with the limited options. I'd have happily bought the black box + CE pet.

Buy the Guilds & Glory pack from the crown store for 5,500 crowns. That's the same 4 DLCs you get in the 'black box'. Then the only thing you'll be missing from that version is the horse, and as you said you've already got a mount.

You would have to buy the other DLCs separately (or get ESO+ to access them) no matter what version of the game you bought because they've never been sold outside of the crown store.

Helpful to know that pack only had four DLC's, I'd thought it was all of them. Of course 5,500 is still normally $40.

The "Gold edition" DLC that they currently have only includes 4 DLC: Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Orsinium, and Imperial City. These are the 2015 and early 2016 DLC. Unless they changed that up for the sale, it does not include any of the newer DLC.

You can get all of the DLC by purchasing ESO Plus. You can use the Crown benefit to buy the DLC, or not.

Also, if you log in 24 days during the month of November, you can get Murkmire as a daily reward.

I don't think that edition would have included all dlc. Probably just the initial four.

    OP,

Frankly, you don't need the newer DLCs until you character gets to CP300. The parts of the game you have (assuming its Dark Brotherhood and Thieve's Guild) has all the important skill lines to unlock.

You won't be able to explore in the DLCs you lack, but they don't "give" you anything besides content. There is *plenty* of that in the base game, the DLCs have relatively little story content.

The DLC dungeons that you can't play really aren't appropriate until you get to CP300+. By the time you get there, there will be other sales.

Also, the black box may not have included all DLCs, just the first four.

Instead of buying crown packs to get the DLC you think you want, sub for a few months. You get access to all DLCS, the craft bag and double bank space as well as 1500 crowns for every month you are subbed. If you dont like the extra after a few months then you cancel and still have enough crowns to buy the DLCs you want.

Gotta hand it to ZOS - charging people full price for years-old content, offering many different and confusing packages (IMO confusing by design), and yet not one of the packages (including the over-priced $80 collection) contain all content to-date.

Sadly they did away with the 'gold edition', which could be found online for <$20 and included a base license and the four DLC that are included in the 'black box'.

The Gold Edition is still available on Amazon, at least in the UK - can't speak for the US.

In the US, it isn't generally available anymore - a few show up on Amazon through third party sellers, one listing the PC version at $60 (physical disc), and another with the PS version at $20 (again physical disc) - both probably old stock.

Looks like any option, I lost $40 with the base/summerset CE option instead of the black box even with four DLC.

Buying the four, buying the black box now, or buying the old 'gold edition', all $40 plus.

Amazon has the gold edition for $80, ebay has it for $47.

Interesting to hear some content is for CP300+ only. I'm at about CP100 after a couple months but only interested in casual play pve - things like 'thieves guild'.

Buying that DLC pack for 5500 would take 4 months or over $50 for ESO+ crowns.

If you wanted to really play and complete each area, not just end game gear grind then I honestly would suggest subscribing. The dlcs in my opinion have really cool story lines, the quests are multi-tiered and generally just better than the base areas. That said thieves guild/dark brotherhood sort of want you to play a sneaky character so that might not be everyone's cup of tea. There is also a continuing story line from Morrowind through Clockwork City finally finishing in Summer set.

This. or you might go eso+ and get all of them, eso+ for an limited time is nice for doing content once.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

That said, for casual PvE Horns of the Reach, Shadows of the Hist, Dragonbones, and Wolfhunter are completely useless, and Imperial City almost as much.

Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Morrowind, Clockwork City, Summerset, and Murkmire are the ones you would want.

Any overland content can be done at any level. Some instanced stuff has level requirements. But CP300 plus is is some artificial number players require for certain content.

It's not an artificial number any more.
From the patch notes to Summerset (4.0.5):

"The Following Dungeons have been adjusted to require CP300 in order to queue using the Activity Finder:

    Veteran Bloodroot Forge
    Veteran Cradle of Shadows
    Veteran Falkreath Hold
    Veteran Fang Lair
    Veteran Imperial City Prison
    Veteran Ruins of Mazzatun
    Veteran Scalecaller Peak
    Veteran White-Gold Tower
    "
Those are the dungeons included in the Imperial City and dungeon DLCs at the time. I assume it's the same with Wolfhunter (March of Sacrifices, Moonhunter's Keep) that has been released after Summerset.
Normal mode of these dungeons can still be done with lower CP, and from the wording I assume that you can also port in manually with lower CP.

I'm not sure about veteran trials.

This late into the game its actually more economical to just get ESO+ and get access to everything for just $15 the first month. Once you complete content you can decide which you want to keep and which youre okay with losing, purchase and then drop the Sub.
