How often does ESO get on sale?

I'm aware that Summerset was on sale a few weeks ago. I wasn't able to benefit from that sale, but I do remember that ESO is the kind of game that gets on sale quite often. Thanksgiving and Black Friday are due in a few weeks, and so I was wondering if anyone knows when the expansion could be on sale? I'm not exactly doing so good when it comes to finances, so I would very much prefer to catch the game when it's cheaper.

Black Friday is your best bet. There's no guarantee - they never tell us far in advance when it's on sale (probably because then no one would buy it at full price) but that's the most likely time.

Keep checking the news page and Facebook/Twitter over the next few weeks and don't assume the sale will be on the actual day.

You can buy Summerset for $26 right now, sale prices are usually around $19.99. So not sure if there is going enough difference to justify waiting. If it was a $20 or more difference, that would be different.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

As for crowns I personally buy once yearly during Black friday, I also pick up a few game keys to give as presents around then because they are usually cheap.

Search online and you can find much better prices than buying from the ESO store (which is grossly overpriced).

I paid around $12 for the base game when the website had it for like $30, got a copy of the gold edition for about the same, picked up Morrowind last fall for around $15, and just bought Summerset for another $15.

Would purchasing the expansion from another retailer work for Steam?

If you own the base game on Steam activating the code on the ESO website will make it available via Steam. So in short: Yes, it works.

Pretty much this. Ad they are correct that Zos has never told us when to expect a sale.

Since the year we had like 5 or 6 sales (seemed like back to back to back) Zos has reduced how often they place crowns on sale as it effectively reduced the price of crown store items.

greenmangaming.com is a good site to watch...they often have some pretty good sales on a lot of their stuff, and they had a huge bethesda spring sale in 2016, with some selected stuff for 80% off. i got the one tamriel imperial edition for $20usd when it was retailing for 80. i got both morrowind and summerset through them as well for some sort of discount but can't remember how much...
