Creating 'researchable' items

I have researched traits on a lot of equipment but when I create items with specific traits and send them to my alts they have the required trait but are not 'researchable' .
I notice that I frequently get items that have traits and some are researchable and others not. What makes the researchable items different, and how do I ensure that when I create items myself that the traits are going to be researchable when I give or sell those items to other players?

The only thing that should prevent a traited item from being researched is a) you already know that trait or b) you don't have an open research slot or c) the item is prevented from research by either the in-game item lock or a PC addon that has locked the item.

    This ^^^
You can only research a max of 3 items at a time per craft (if you invested in all the passives) *and* those 3 have to be different items.

For example, you can not research two different traits on axes at the same time, only one per type of weapon/armor ...

After reading the two posts above mine, @aikidoshi, send us a screenshot of the item(s) you want to research ... so we can help.

Turns out I'm an idiot. I had already researched all the traits for the bow on my alts so it would not show them as researchable because they were 'known'. I assumed that if they researchable it would show them as such even if my character knows them.
    Case closed. Thanks all.

If this is on PC there are some really good addons that can show all your characters research while you are using your crafter so you don't run into this issue again:

Don't feel bad man, it's happened to all of us at some point or another.

I know this wasn't OPs problem, but I thought I'd post it for the benefit of anyone else who stumbles into this thread with researching questions. Transmuted items can not be researched. You can't use one crafter to transmute items into, let's say, Nirnhoned, and then research them on a different toon.

I had a guildmate learn that the hard way :D

Cool; I was looking for something like that.
Is there a lot of overlap in function between the two, or is it a good idea to install both?

The main difference for me is that AIResearchGrid once you are on the character you want to see, you have to manually change between crafts. Craftstore you see all crafts for that character on one tab.

I have moved to Craftstore mostly to see alts, but I still have AIR loaded because I prefer it's Motif display. You don't need both though.

    Thanks for the info!
I've read the descriptions of both, and I'm going to try Craftstore to start. But since it was the desire to see what motifs my characters already know that prompted my search for such an add-on, I'll give AIResearchGrid a look-see at some point to compare the motif displays.

Traitbuddy also does that. Tracks known traits and motifs on all characters, plus also the required traits for all crafted sets.
