How do I check which houses I've bought?

I recall doing this quest that gave me a "house". It was a room, but it worked as housing. I thought it was one of those available for preview on the Store, but it doesn't seem like it. I have no idea how to check or which "house" I ended up gaining after all. It's been too long since I did that quest. Any suggestions?

If you look at your world map you can see which houses you own as they're coloured white instead of being greyed out :) Another way to check iirc is to go to your collections tab and enter the Housing section, and any houses you own will be listed there (usually under the sub-headings like Staple, Notable etc.) :)

Collections -> Homes, then it splits into 3 categories with top half showing what you have collected.

I prefer to open the map and click on the Houses icon (top-right).

It gives a much cleaner (easier to read) list than the one in Collections, along with their location on the map.
Collected at top; Not Collected under that.

Incidentally you can get a maximum of 5 free inn rooms: 1 in each alliance's main city, 1 in Vivec City (if you've got Morrowind) and 1 in Alinor (if you've got Summerset).

Each character can only unlock 1 for free, so you either need 5 characters or you need to pay a small amount of gold for the others (3,000 I think). But if you really wanted to you could make a character, unlock the room and then delete the character and make a new one to unlock another room because it's a permanent account-wide unlock.

I think the free unlock, though it is account wide, is "done" by faction. So I think you need to (at some point) have a character in each faction.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

I just quote Danikat as that information is what I will use to explain something that I found out myself.

You need to pick up quest as a notice hanging on wall or lamp post in that home city for your alliance, if you use Crown Store quest starter section to activate quest for a new born character it will direct you to the last chapter's city which is Summerset (Alinor).

    Here is quest description: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Room_to_Spare

That part about Crown Store isn't true anymore as that have been changed to direct you the last zone which and for now is Summerset. I tried to use that CS quest starter first and found out that I had to create a new character and use the method described where you go directly to your alliance city and pick up quest instead.

It is a fast process where you more or less just interact with a NPC standing outside of your room/house and then you own it. Enter room once and you map should now update with a white house symbol, if you never enter room/house it could still be black on map like every other map marker until you have visited it or been close enought to trigger map marker update.

Make sure that you USE (read) quest item once to get it into your library (journal) and then you can delete/destroy this item (book; should be in category for quest items in your inventory) : https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Anthology_of_Available_Abodes

Check that you don't have other notes, journals or books that you might have picked up that get stored in that section in your inventory. Some start quest when you read them and it is easy to overlook that you have already picked up a book while hunting down other quests or lorebooks.
