    Blackgerd is an acceptable pronunciation.

Watch the volume here, or your ears may, quite literally, begin to bleed.

This thread is amusing given that the dialog in the game makes reference to this.

One of the Argonians you need to talk to explicitly states they're pronouncing it that way intentionally. Do people just breeze through dialogue, because that's how you miss important stuff.

I actually just heard this on a podcast recently discussing correct pronunciations for D&D games.

It is apparently pronounced Blaggerd though.

Another interesting one was that "Ye" in "Ye Old Tavern" etc. isn't actually pronounced "Ye" but "The" and the Y is just how TH was written.

Where? I went through the main quest and every side quest I can find and haven't seen them. :(

Still doing the quest, but so far I ran into this one:

That's the one. I chuckled when I saw that, and then this thread showed up.

Honestly, I'd be fine with them just re-writing the text from blackguard to blaggard. The pronunciation isn't matching what I'm reading and that's throwing me off.

Totally cool with them being the blaggards. For the love of all that is good and decent, please just make the written text match the verbal pronunciation!

...yeah, but it's correctly spelled "Blackguard." A lot of words in English (and other languages) are not pronounced the way they appear they should be. This is one of them.

Drives me nuts when I hear an English actor pronounce it "loo-tenant". I can only assume they're instructed to do so but it sounds weird.

Ye and the is an interesting one. Old English had a runic alphabet and there was a symbol for 'th'. When English switched to the Latin alphabet the nearest they could come to that rune was the letter 'Y', hence the spoken 'the' became the written 'ye'. That said, though, people have been pronouncing it as 'yee' for so long I doubt you can persuade anybody it's wrong.

Blaggard from blackguard, though, is obviously just ordinary slippage. Instead of pronouncing the 'ck' and 'g' distinctly, they merged over time, no doubt because it's just easier.

I just wish they'd put in an NPC to rant about people spelling rogue as "rouge", too.

I erect the spine of pedantry. "Brethren" is plural--you'd want to go with either "An egg brother of mine" or "One of my egg brethren".

Ah Xhu! I mean yes! That sounds like the right way to pronounce it in the common tongue.
It seems I still have to practise some more.

I erect the spine of gratitude for showing me the right way!

That's not the reason for the word, though - the Blaggerds forced her to give up information by (threat of) violence, so "thugs" is what they are.
It do find it funny, though, that she's mad at the guy for mispronouncing his own organisation. :D
