Why do mounts look different on different toons? (and different than on the log in screen)

I have mounts that look different on different toons, and I can't seem to get them to look "normal." I've tried using them with and without costumes on, and it doesn't seem to change their appearance, so what does?

Do your characters have different levels of mount upgrades? When you get each mount upgrade to 20 (out of the max 60) your mount gets a visual upgrade. Carry capacity definitely adds bags of some kind to your mount, and while I can't remember which is which I can tell you that mount speed and mount stamina will add a bridle of some variety and leg wraps around most mounts. (eta: stamina is in fact Horse Armor (tm), I usually have it disabled so my bad!)

So if you've got one character with 20/0/0 and 0/20/0, they will have different equipment on their mount. You can disable each mount upgrade appearance in... gameplay settings, I think? There's definitely an option.

What are the differences you've noticed?

Only thing I can think of is the riding skills upgrades - most mounts gain extra gear when your skill is above 20. Typically saddle bags for inventory, armour of some sort for stamina and straps/cloth for speed.

Other than that I can only think of minor changes like maybe they're slightly bigger on a bigger character, or have slightly different animations, but I'm not sure because I'm not the kind of person who usually notices small details like that.

There are 3 toggles in the options (Gameplay I think, don't remember) to show / not show the Stamina, Speed, and Inventory upgrades on the mount. If someone toggles off some or all of them, mounts look a bit different. Also some races are bigger so the mount they're riding is bigger, too. Altmers are the biggest, I think, while Bosmer are the smallest.
Life is a ride, like days in a train, cities rush by, like ghosts in the night.
The rhythm of wheels, time fades away, stations of a journey, destination unknown.

I'll check that out, try to find the toggle. I'll also post some pics. The literally look really different. All of the toons are fully trained regarding mounts. That was it!!!! Thank you so much for answering :) Really appreciate it!!!

They size according to race, also. Bosmer mounts are smaller.

I know it's just me, but - seems like my argonian changes colors slightly to match whatever costume or mount I assign him...
