Best class for Magicka?

@AcadianPaladin can you teach me your magplar build? My main and first toon is a magplar and I hate her so much...

I have recently respecced her to stamina, but I really am a magicka girl at heart.

I would love to pick your brain and see what you are running.

Mainly play her as part of a duo with my husband. His character is most a tanky dps (I was to be healing dps) so we could do most overland content duo. At this she’s fine, but in pugs I find her frustrating as I feel she falls short at both healing AND dps.

Can take this to messages so as not to derail the thread.
PC/NA - Perpetually casual. Furniture and fish collector. Lover of exploration and opener of urns.
Maxed CPs, still no clue how to endgame, too much time opening urns, prolly.
    Eve Morrison - Templar DPS - Furniture Crafter/Maker of Arms - Co-op w/hubby/achievements/crafting
Jilly Narraway - MagDK DPS - Delves/Dungeons/Dolmans - She murders ALL THE THINGS!
Fynn the Lucky - Warden Tank -- Seer of things/Explorer of places - RP/Solo/Storyline/Completionist
    Siluna Southpaw - StamDK DPS slippery-fingered type/Murder hobo - RP/Solo/Storyline

magden upcoming changes will make them quite strong, don't be afraid of rolling one

They didn't get buffed. DPS is the same as, if not lower than, pre-Murkmire. They're still parsing way behind all the other classes.

ZOS' stated goal with these changes was to keep their DPS the same, so they buffed a few abilities/passives (advanced species, shalks, bird of prey) but nerfed others (bear, swarm). The end result is an even more complicated rotation than before (magden's arguably have the hardest rotation in the game) while still having the lowest DPS of any class.

Magplar and magsorc both have super simple rotations while outputing high DPS. Magblade has a hard rotation, but the payoff is high DPS. There is no payoff for magdens. They require maximum effort for minimum payoff.

Their DPS is technically enough to complete all content, but they are by far and away the weakest class in the game (which they've always been).

nice... glad to see this post still rolling :)

Can anyone give a basic rundown on a magsorc? Specifically something simple? (since i'm a magicka newb lol).

One person mentioned a 2-4 button spam build with pets and the post above me mentions "super simple rotations" on magplar and magsorc lol.

I still might respec my nightblade... but i'd kinda like to keep my quest/skill line/etc. progress on my sorc right now (again, my main active character) so a simple yet effective mage build on her would be useful :)

Only problem i can see would be gear. I'd have to completely regear her but... again, i have a crafter alt so i could sift through the crafted sets and see what kind of decent starters there are around.

ty for all the discussion guys. Still here and taking notes :)

I find overland questing a lot more fun on a thief character. In fact, while I'm hugely biased to magicka in general, my main overland character is now my Bosmer stamblade.

The advantage of the thief style is that you can skip most fights altogether. :)

Otherwise I'd say that any reasonable spec should be easy overland at 160 CP or higher.

Templar is indeed the right class if you want to queue for dungeons as a healer, given the upcoming nerfs to nightblade and sorcerer.

You know... i started looking up builds and the more i see, the more i like magsorc.

BUT... i think i might roll a new one anyway as i look around.

My stamsorc is an imperial and, while i know it doesn't matter THAT much, i think i'd like to roll a high elf for a magicka build.

Those passively look awfully nice lol...

I think when people say race doesn't matter that much, this is misleading. This game caters to different audiences. There are those who enjoy the story content and the questing, who perhaps came after playing Bethesda's single player games. From all you've said, you seem to be that type of person.

On the other hand, there are those who play this game solely as an MMO, who have grown tired of questing or never liked it in the first place. Such people quick-level characters by grinding, then they either go PvP, or they group up with others to do ever harder end-game PvE content.

For overland, public dungeons, and some of the easier group dungeons, race doesn't matter at all. Basically that stuff is so easy, and you have so much headroom to grow in power via CP and experience, you'll eventually just steamroll it with a broom and bucket. For PvP (well, solo PvP), veteran trials, veteran arenas and veteran DLC dungeons you need every edge you can get. There is a distinct jump in difficulty when it comes to that content. Here race matters a lot, unless you perhaps don't care about high scores in PvE or 1vXing in PvP, but you are also extremely good in the first place.

In other words, race is really unimportant until you progress to end-game, where it is suddenly very important to optimise race along with every other aspect of your build.

I get the feeling that a lot of the respondents in this thread, who talk about class balance, are end-game players. That's where your original question "What is the best class for magicka" really matters. What you have to ask yourself, though, is whether you are actually interested in end-game content. For example, I came from Oblivion / Skyrim, quested for a while, and today I mostly PvP. I realised some time ago that this is a very broad game and I didn't want to complete or become proficient at all of it. Also take the other extreme: Fishing, trading and house decorating. You need no combat proficiency for that at all. I knew one person who only played the market.

If you just want to craft some gear, Julianos + Seducer will probably do the trick. If you have some gold, and you are running pet(s), buy Necropotence. Maybe farm Lich. My CP3xx friend is running the latter two in his soloing / PvP build.

    tyvm :)

that is kinda what i was thinking too, with the race thing. Overworld not so much a big difference, but it hurt when i started in on something serious.

Think i'm gonna roll that high elf and just spam dolmens out in the desert for awhile (and watching netflix on another screen lol). Then swap to questing where i want when i max.

I've been looking at the PTR notes, though, and i'm back to a dilemma lol. Magsorc seems to be taking a bit of a hit and magplar seems to be fairly happy.

I've never had a templar... and my max level sorc will always be there (optimal or not...) if i want to respec.

Might make me a high elf templar and go magicka. Play with jesus beam for awhile etc.

Hell, if nothing else, i've never healed a dungeon group (in this MMO anyway... extensive tank and heal experience in others) so a solid magplar setup might be interesting to try out healing too :)

To the best of my recollection dolmens give extra XP for each new one you do. If you sit on the same one, while waiting for respawn, you won't make optimal use of your XP drink either. Of course you may be thinking of the 3 dolmen Alik'r run. Good for getting jewelry to deconstruct.

I think the optimal grind spot is still Spellscar, in Craglorn, as long as it's not too busy. Do it with no more than two people, drawing 2 to 4 groups of mobs at a time. Use training gear and Mythic Aetherial Ambrosia, if you can afford it. Tip: Level the Connoisseur passive first, so you get 50 minutes out of that drink. Haven't timed it, but I seem to remember claims of levelling a character to 50 in 5 hours, which seems about right, when you don't count the preparation (making training gear etc.). Skyshards, Undaunted Mettle, Lorebooks, and the Psijic skill line are the bigger grinds.

For what it's worth, this is my current magplar PvP / DD build:

    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Special:EsoBuildData?id=88637

It works in PvP and mid-level PvE. I swap Javelin out for Luminous Shards in PvE, and maybe stick Elemental Blockade and the destro ult on the destro bar.

The main feature of this build is that, by combining Prisoner with Race Against Time, you can sprint almost indefinitely, which is unusual for a magicka character. The reason for wearing Overwhelming Surge is to counter nightblades in PvP. To counteract the squishiness of an all light armor non-shielding setup I went with some protective jewelry and that Hist Bark sword, which brings up the resistances. You can easily tune the build by having multiple swords, though, for example a Nirnhoned or Sharpened Willpower sword for more damage.

Sorry, I don't play sorc, so don't have a build I could share for that class.

If i understood OP right, he's not looking for BiS top 2% dps or anything. Its literally for questing, so chill out guys. So, my suggestion is play what feels most fun. For me most fun PvE class is magDK. Super cool effects on skils and you can always switch up your rotation and skills, that is if you like firemage/battlemage type. If you preffer cold go warden, or Sorc if lightning. HF!

    tyvm for the info :)

yea, i'm doing the 3 dolmen alik'r run. The jewelry is bonus points i didn't expect. Haven't messed with this expansion much yet so my crafter alt is parked at 50 everything and level 3 jewelcrafting lol. I'm banking all the trash rings/amulets i'm getting along with any blues (for deconstruct) and then vendoring everything else. Up to level 9 so far on the magplar and already made over 1k gold and lots of DC fodder lol. Good stuff.

Whipped up a set (minus jewelry) of "training" gear (seducer and julianos) for 4 tiers of levels (6, 20, 30 and 40) as well as lightning destro staves (and a couple resto staves starting at 30, just in case i want to start leveling that then lol).

Already kinda digging it. New skill set. New alt. Feel like i'm accomplishing something with my high levels by leveling my jewelcrafting on the side and even making a little coin. All while zoning out to dolmens while i watch movies on another screen. Relaxing as hell lmao.

    tyvm everyone that responded :)

    yessir. Pretty much that :)

part of my brain clicked into place when i thought about having a solid healing setup for max level to go with my blowing stuff up, so i went with templar. We'll see how it goes as i level/gear/quest, but for now i'm happy :)
