And make sure you kill an enemy too. People have missed out in previous give-aways because they only did crafting writs or healed in a dungeon and didn't actually kill anything themselves.
I normally part an alt out in the wilderness somewhere and log into them first to kill whatever happens to be nearby, then switch to another character for whatever I want to do that day. Can't say I'm fond of the idea either. Gems are supposed to be there as a means of getting the item you want from those crates if you have rotten luck. They're a kind of mercy system. Having stuff available only for gems goes in the complete opposite direction. If you want it, you have to buy a bunch of crates and pray for duplicates.
