Ice, Wardens and Nords -- one approach to a fix

Games generally do a lackluster job with ice magic, and ESO has been no exception. Here's one idea for a fix:

Introduce an active skill that converts all outgoing damage -- or at least all spell/magical damage -- to the frost type.

Obvious advantages include:
  • Balancing to make ice magic sufficiently powerful could be straightforward, via skills (passive or active) that buff ice damage.
  • The "flavor" of having a character who does lots and lots of ice damage would be easily attained.

Further, the Tri-Focus problem of unwanted taunting could be finessed, in that ice mages could use fire or lightning staffs -- incidentally getting the appropriate Ancient Knowledge bonuses -- and still do ice magic.

And as a small further bonus to the idea, an ice mage might now actually do so much ice damage as to be a reliable source of Minor Maim, obviating the need for other techniques (e.g. Heroic Slash) for applying it.

The specific skill I have in mind for the ice damage conversion is Expansive Frost Cloak. Reasons include:
  • Many wardens already spam Frost Cloak on cooldown.
  • The current pairing of morphs isn't really needed.
  • Wardens already have a passive skill that buffs ice magic damage. That's the natural "knob" to adjust for any balancing considerations.
  • The choice makes thematic sense.

As for Nords -- giving them a nice racial buff to ice damage makes sense too. Ice, Nords, wardens, bears and tanking all sort of fit together. And of course Nords do need some kind of DPS buff.

Challenges for this plan include:
  • Changing damage types requires some programming. But I've seen similar ideas in games as old as Guild Wars (there was a Mesmer skill that changed all incoming damage to the Earth type), so I presume that's not terribly hard.
  • Ice damage and max stamina aren't a well-matched pair of buffs for Nords. But one could say something similar about Dunmer and fire damage.
  • It only helps wardens.
  • Certain tooltips -- e.g. for Elemental Blockade -- are written under the assumption that frost damage will come from frost skills, and would need edits.
  • If this all goes to the extreme of changing stamina-style damage to ice, some champion point weirdness could ensue.

So in other words: "buff my build." No.

    Nords need immunity to snares.

Might be enough to make a Nord Magicka Nightblade! :)

Nords are known as warriors, not ice mages.

Wardens need a damage buff in PvE, Nords need a buff and ice staves need a buff in the damage department so his build or not, he's right about those 3 things needing a buff.

Huh? Which build of mine are you referring to?

My Nord, perhaps? Uh ... I don't have one.
My frost mage? Uh ... I don't have one.
My magdens? Well, I do have a couple ... but I've barely played them, except for generic leveling and a bit of healing.

Well if Nords were mages, Ice magic would be viable, But Thor and Zeus were Nordic and they wielded Lightning.

So you'd get "Ice builds" that don't use ice staves?

    Now, that makes sense!

Zeus is Greek, not Nordic, maybe you meant Odin, but he didn't weild any particular element, like Thor.
