HDR Broken on PS4 Since Wolfhunter Update Edit: HDR fixed

PS4 NA PS4Pro same here - Whether 1080 Enhanced or 4K, the colors are very subdued now. I do think things were a bit over-saturated before (Bright blue sky at night, for example) but either HDR has been accidentally disabled or adjusted too far the other way. "Washed-out and gray" is a good description.

Interestingly, the HUD items and load screens are not affected - they're the same as pre-update. Just the in-game zones have lost a lot of color and aren't as vivid as before.

Yes, this may indeed be important to take into account too @ZOS_GinaBruno when looking at the issue.

When my HDR is disabled things usually look too dark but it sounds like this is going the other direction? Sounds to me like the engine is using the wrong color space now.

They fixed the color issue with HDR. It looks washed out because you're used to oversaturated colors. So, while they fixed the color saturation issue, the HDR calibration settings could still be improved.

so this is a "fix"? I haven't looked yet; my colors were never over-saturated to begin with and i wasn't 'accustomed' to them being that way. my colors looked fine in HDR before.

I doubt this is a fix of any sort. The game looks exactly like how it was without HDR and it looks terrible. Also if it was a fix it would be in the patch notes.

If this was indeed the intended HDR effect as someone suggested. It would no doubt be a game breaker for me. For a year on ps4 pro and over 6 moths on Xbox One X I had the most beautiful color and light it was stunning. If that is gone so am I. When you experience the beauty of what ESO was with the HDR there is no going back. I hope this is fixed soon I could not even play and try the new dungeons today. I am patient and know things happen on patch day but I sure hope this is not permanent.

So Summerset is suppose to look like vulcanos ash has covered all the land, nope it’s broken .HDR brightness setting for example in PS4pro has no single effect when using a slider etc.

Hmm. Are you all using 4k (Xbox One X or PS4 Pro)? Also, can anyone provide a screenshot?

    Heya Gina,

Here's what it looked like on PS4 Pro before the patch (take into account, though, that all these shots were captured on a PS4 Pro in HDR mode so won't look EXACTLY right in SDR, but they certainly illustrate the problem):

    https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ar0nARINWiTTg_hUuCypVEk3_ss7RQ

and here's what the roughly same angle looks like now:

    https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ar0nARINWiTTg_hVYrNYuJmezCRdpQ

HDR mode *is* still turned on by the game, but it looks like the entire game has been "desaturated" to the point where all of the beauty of it is drained down to a grey, lifeless husk ;)

Here's another "before the patch" shot that shows how warm and realistic the late-evening "magic hour" sun was:
    https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ar0nARINWiTTg_hYscCE889tXd-c-g

Now it's just dull and washed out.

My Warden's hair, meanwhile, is coloured a vibrant red. Not any more - now it's kind of a dull light brown.

I cross-checked on Xbox One S, where I can't run 4K but still can run in HDR - and the problem is the same.

In both cases the game interface itself seems fine, it's the rendered game that's been dialed back half way to black and white! ;)

4K no HDR looks bad, looks like it's gone for both consoles.

it was the first thing i noticed upon getting to the toon selection to login.

Me as well - noticed it two seconds after the character selection screen appeared. It's THAT bad!

This is odd! I thought I had issues early on when changing my console but just accepted it.

Anyway.. I play ESO on an Xbox one X but plugged into a 1080p monitor with no HDR, and mine has looked as washed out as these screenshots since I bought the console.

I had just assumed it was supposed to look like this, but now peoples screenshots look like how mine is (and they are saying this is not right) so am a little confused.

Has there been an issue since day 1 whilst running on a PS4 Pro/One X but not at 4K and without HDR? @ZOS_GinaBruno

(PS4 ) I've been getting washed out colors maybe 2 or 3 times a week when I log on. It's been happening since December 2017.

As you can probably gather from this thread and the one on Reddit, if that was a thing it's something that few people experienced until this patch. Now *everyone* using HDR loses their colour saturation.

It would be nice if we could get an update on this issue from developers. I imagine for some this is not a priority however for those of us who have invested in the Xbox One X and subscribe to ESO it is a big deal. I bought an Xbox One X because of ESO offering 4k HDR. For me this is a game breaker so it would be nice to get some information.

    Hey everyone,

After some investigation, we found the change to HDR was intended to aid in some overly-saturated assets found throughout the game, but it had some unintended consequences. We’re continuing to evaluate the changes that were made in yesterday's patch, and will keep everyone updated on the status.

IMHO they really over-compensated. All my characters now have gray skin. They sucked too much color out of the game, and the result is... bland. It's very disappointing. The load screens look fine, then you're in the zone where there's not much color at all. Yet another example where if console had a PTS, some feedback could have been obtained prior to release.

An odd thought, but I don't suppose it would be possible to give players a saturation/color intensity slider under options - video so we can decide for ourselves how gray we want our world to be?

Was anyone actually objecting to the HDR colour saturation on console? I don't recall hearing any complaints about it - and indeed, a BIG part of the reason I made sure to buy Summerset on PS4 as well, and the reason I continue to subscribe to ESO Plus on PS4 as well, is the fact that the game looked so damn gorgeous in HDR and 4K.

Now it just looks grey, drab and depressing and I don't really even want to play it any more, as even the non-HDR PC version has far more vibrant (and yes, realistic) colour than the PS4 version does after this change.

It really is a "did they even LOOK at this before releasing it?" thing.

I'd like to see this reverted, or at the very least, a toggle added to restore the game to its original colour saturation.
