Low damage on my character

Hello Guys, First time posting on the forums here...

I noticed only when looking at other characters that my damage is really low and the only reason i survived this long was due to spamming Breath of life.

I am level 50 CP 200 and have done most quests DLC and nearly finished cadwells gold...

Unfortunately i have 1417 weapon damage - Critical 26.8% and 1433 spell damage!

I've tried changing my attributes, skills and weapons (the best i could get) to work around this... but I don't know what to do as I'm a returning player and don't know all the mechanics of the game.

NOTE: If this is the wrong section sorry about that.

gonna need more info here. You're talking about breath of life and also your damage, are you a healer or a damage dealer? What's your class/race and what role are you trying to fill (DPS, Heals, tank)?

You are going to build differently for healing or DPS, but early on, there is frankly a lot of overlap.

First place to start is gear. You need to get 2 5-piece sets that make sense for what you are doing. An easy thing to get early on might be 5 pieces of Julianos, and 5 pieces of kagrenacs hope or maybe seducer. Any good crafter should be able to make that pretty easy. Its a good balance of damage and resources.

Next you need to get a weapon that makes sense, and make it at least purple if not gold. Either two destro staffs for damage or one destro staff and one resto staff for healing. You also want your gear to ideally have 5 pieces of light armor, and 1 each of medium and heavy. Once you have undaunted level, this will give you the best stats.

You also want to get all your points into magic, and all your enchants into magic. This is often overlooked by newer players. For a magic templar, your max magic is just as important as your spell damage, in terms of the tool tip value on your skills. A good rule of thumb is that 10.5 points of max magic is equal to 1 point of spell damage.

Spell damage: You can basically get spell damage from the quality of your weapon, the enchants on your jewelry and weapons, set bonuses from gear, your mundus stone, and major and minor sorcery (buffs).

Max magic: This can come from armor enchants, food/drink buffs, mundus stone, gear, and certain passives.

These two stats are the primary factor in determining your raw damage. Other stats to strongly consider are spell penetration (passives, mundus stone, certain gear bonuses, major/minor breach (debuffs)), and magic recovery (jewerly enchants, mundus, set bonuses, passives).

Stats are important, and largely determined by your gear, skills, and their passives. That said, it is only the tip of the iceberg. Far more important is how you actually setup a damage or healing rotation with your skills and how well you execute it while in combat.

    Just checking guys...

-so i got a purple destruction staff and restoration staff.

-5 light armour / cyrodill of light armour set, put all points into magic, got magicka increase jewellery, using the spells based on Magicka DPS using the advisor.

....however with all this i am doing only 1200 base damage.

I'm going to check out Magicka Templar Pve build beamplar on the website you suggested Sparr0w.

However i would like to know why this set up isn't strong?

@zaerresz , you mean you're using Light of Cyrodiil set? Mind, that it's a defensive set (it only gives a small boost to spell damage), so you shouldn't expect much damage increase while using it. If you're looking for simple and easy to get damage-oriented sets, you can look towards the 'workhorse' sets like Law of Julianos.

In this game, your stats are primarily derived from gear. Different gear sets have different focus. The clue is usually the 5th piece bonus as it is always the strongest one. Also remember, your character has 12 gear slots (staffs count as 2) at all times. So you can wear 2 5-piece sets and a 2-piece set at all times. From what I can tell, you are only wearing one 5-piece, so you are leaving a lot of damage on the table. FYI, the 2 piece set is almost always a monster set from Vet PVE dungeons. Each dungeon has a unique 2 piece for your head and shoulders. Again, some favor damage, some favor healing, some favor resources, etc.

The 5th piece bonus of light of cyro is damage reduction while channeling. For doing damage, this set is beyond useless (truth be told, its beyond useless for most things). Compare that to the 5th piece of julianos, which is a flat 300 spell damage, or burning spell weave where there is a chance to proc 525 spell damage. Once you grasp how gear really works, it will start to become obvious why your spell damage tool tip is so low. Also, the difference between a purple weapon and gold weapon is actually quire a bit of spell damage as well, but please dont go making things gold until you have settled on a build.

There are also buffs to consider. One of the most fundamental is major sorcery. As a templar you can get it from spell power potions, or the mages guild skill entropy. It is a 20% buff to spell damage. Basically every magic class needs to figure out how to get this into their build one way or another. Another buff you need is major Prophecy (boost spell crit). Again you can get this from spell power potions or slotting the mages guild skill "inner light" (which also boosts max magic). If you dont have major sorcery and major prophecy at essentially all times while in combat, you have a fundamental design flaw in your build.

Also again remember, that spell damage is one of three stats (spell damage, max magic, spell pen) that will determine how much damage one of your skills actually does. You also have to consider spell crit, and magic regen when determining what a damage rotation is actually capable of. I would focus on gear that fits your build and your rotation first. Your stats will kind of be what the will be. My magic NB pulls 50k on target dummies, and to be honest, I have no idea what his base spell damage is off the top of my head. Haha

Two give you an example, end game magic DPS typically run Siroria (a set that stacks spell damage while in combat), Mother sorrow (a set designed to give you spell crit), and Zaan or Skoria as the two piece (both essentailly do flame damage randomly to the target). We get spell penetration from light armor passives, CP, and group support, we get regen from group support, potions and our food (whichmothers drink), and we get max magic from group support, passives and our enchants. When you put it all together, you cover the big five. Spell damage, Spell Penetration, Max magic, Magic Regen, and Spell crit. And because we chug spell power potions while in combat on cooldown, we also ensure we have major sorcery and major prophecy as well.

Also, as should be obvious with that last paragraph, your group can do a lot for your stats and resources. For example, the ultimate aggressive warhorn boost your group stats by 10% and boosts your crit damage. Healers have sets that reduce cost of abilities and add weapon/spell damage, and they can cast skills with synergies that restore resources. A tank will give things like major fracture and major breech which boosts weapon and spell penetration. Long story short, your actual values for these categories are going to be very different sitting around in deshaan vs what they are in an actual combat with a coordinated group.

Thanks again Oreyn_Bearclaw, i'll try using julianos armour, using entropy, inner light, spell power potion and hopefully make my build more adequate in other regards based on the information you have provided.
