So what are the go-to defensive sets for Magicka tank-types (Post Wolfhunter)?

So until now I've been running Wizards riposte + Spellpower Cure + Pirate Skeleton + Willpower on my templar (2 heavy 5 light, DW and 1H/shield)

Wizard's Riposte isn't looking that hot after the patch though.

At first i thought i would just swap WR for another light defensive set, but maybe i want to go 5 heavy and a sustain set instead. Preferably it would be something with a proc that i can keep on my backbar to run Willpower fruntbar, but its not a must if the stats are good enough anyways.

I might also go defensive + sustain and swap Pirate Skeleton for Skoria, not quite sure yet.

I run mainly No-CP and BGs, but ill gladly take suggestions for Normal CP too!

Why not backbar SPC 1h+shield and do willpower frontbar so that you can wear whatever 5pc defensive set you want?

I could, but I would lose the 120-whatever damage if i did that, preferable i want both 4 pieces active on my frontbar too.

Nevermind that though, is there any math out on what the most effective defensive set right now would be? Are people still using Light Brass for example, or is heavy armor generally a better alternative?

Come to think of it, maybe i should just add Transmutation and get some more Sturdy...

I believe, technically speaking, that title belongs to Pariah, just Mathematically, but I'm too lazy to do it now.

People do a whole lot of things, best not to do anything based on them.

I do 2 4pc Front Bar and both active back.

Magicka Furnace and Desert Rose. This is meant to be unlimited sustain and just about is. Even through mist form

Parah, mist form proactively, pirate skeleton with little armor, or heartland for AOE dmg protection.

That would be my guess with wizard leaving a void.

I've been running Vampires Cloak in place of Riposte for the last few days. It works fine. Reactive is also an option, I'm going to test it again soon.

I can confirm heavy pariah works great, especially when you are a vampire. It kinda makes you immune to quick executes and gives you time to react. It works best on classes with a lot of healing over time though, imo. The passive healing acts like additional mitigation and it gives you more time on the offensive.

What you guys think of impreg and either going full sturdy or put points in the heavy armor focus on a magplar?
3.5 k impen together with 23 k resistances in light seems pretty good.

I will try out new crest, 10k cp tooltip heal every 5 sec on block is pretty good on paper. Combined with psijic blockshield thats 7.5k PvP damage mitigated with no direct cost attached.

Ironblood if you can afford to play with the 50% snare. Pariah is great but must be double bared

Use trans if you need the Regen and crit resists. Solid set that compared to reposte.

And the willingness to grind for it (why I still don't have it)

I had similar thoughts. Looks very solid on paper, especially for a build that doesn't have access to a high tooltip heal... Say a healthden

Impreg if you want constant resists. Pariah isn't as good at high health, and I'm pretty sure it only beats impreg when you go below a certain level.

Parish outparses any other defensive set at 68% hp.

This is an amazing thread discussing all defensive mechanisms in the game. I think it’s still relatively updated and a good source for thought material.

Yes I think the set scales best with gapclose or NB shade/ Sorc streak. Sadly mist doesn’t remove the snare :(

Yeah, at 68% If you run quite heavily hot based to maintain high HP like mag tanks do, then its better to go with impreg.

The old Riposte was better, but VC is better than the new Riposte. I should mention that I just use mismatched magicka head and shoulders instead of a monster set. I don't like to have less than 41K magicka total. My other 5 piece set is Shacklebreaker.

Wear it with Robes of the Hist and see if the hist set still procs, if it does, its another oversight by ZOS. I'll bet that it does...

Wearing those two together gives you zero damage, resources, and regen, and the heal would be neglegable in this high burst meta we have been in for a long time.

Now if you can force it to proc via mage guild skill, it would be funny to make a troll tank build

Nice, but if you pair it with Pirate Skeleton you're looking at Major + Minor protection while shielded, *** might be OP with Elegance actually going to try it and let you know.

Just need to farm it! I've been rocking Alteration Mastery + Elegance + Thurvokun and it's really nice for 1v1's and dropping mines + atronach on groups while shield spamming can ***.

I don't know why you mention those subpar sets if the answer has always been Combat Physician....

    ...ok not... xD

Pariah and VC seem quite good options, I would add good old Buffer of the Swift/ Bastion of the Heartland if you have access to minor/major protection buffs through other set/skill

Tristat 3 big and 3 triune to put yourself over 30k hp in pariah. Youll have great mitigation and at 20k hp and below, outstanding.
