since you went dark elf you should go magicka and should use destroy staff for the most part but while questing you can basically use want you want till you get to end game. id just have fun while questing and do what you want try different abilities and weapons. if you have trouble doing questing and stuff you can look up builds and guides to help you

Mainly Dark Elf DKs use 2 Fire Destruction Staves which are Magicka weapons.

Vampire and 2 Destro Fire Staves

but as Dunmer Dual Wield stamina build could also work

Personally I prefer the magikca play style & definitely play to it's fire wielding strengths

This depends on the kind of character you want to play.

Stamina DKs are very poison based. Your choice between DW and 2h. No, really. Normally the advice is that 2h works better for PvP, as it's better suited for burst, while DW is better for PvE because it's easier to sustain. Bows can offer a bit of utility once you've gotten to 15 and unlocked a second weapon bar. You'll also want medium armor. Respecs are fairly cheap, so you can play around with these and decide if you like it. I'd also recommend considering becoming a werewolf if this is the route you want to go.

Magicka DKs are very flame based, which benefits from your racial choice, eventually. You'll want light armor and an inferno staff. Later on you might want to add a second staff of your choice. Though I'd advise against choosing an ice staff, because it's heavy attack taunts.

Finally, DKs make excellent tanks, so if you wanted to go that route. In this case you'll want a sword and shield with heavy armor. A lot of the class's features build towards this goal naturally, so it is a solid place to start.

I have 4 questions for you:

1: Do you want to play PvE, PvP or a both?
2: What role would you like to play?
3: Do you like Stamina, Health or Magicka based builds?
4: Do you prefer Ranged or Melee builds?

Race doesn't matter until you start counting every last ounce of dps for leaderboard scores. So for now, do whatever you want. Experiment and so what you like but the flat answer to your question is yes, you can.

I started with a wood elf stamdk and wound up really enjoying DK's and have mained a magDK for sometime now. I realized that I just didn't really enjoy the blandness of stamina setups, they are all basically the same with a bow on the backbar.

So my advice would be to make one character of each class and play each one up to around level 15 or 20. See which one you really care to play; maybe you'll find yourself gravitating towards one character.

If you are absolutely deadset on DK's already, GREAT! DK's are a lot of fun to play because everything is fire and the visuals for the skills are great (until you start animation canceling and then you don't see the fun stuff, but thats another story for another time).

Another reason magDK's are fun is that they find themselves in what I call the half-way. For several skills they need to be in melee range (which isn't as close as you actually think) but they can also drop back a bit and hit from range. You'll need to learn how to be mobile as a magDK, moving in and out much like a boxer would compared to the relatively static positioning of a ranged DD or a pure melee DD (their concern is simply staying out of the red). This can challenge your stamina, especially if you dodge roll a lot.

Edit: as a magDK you get a lot of survivability: reflective plate reflects arrows and spells back to the caster for 6 seconds and removes snares from you, you get a rockstar Ultimate in Standard of Might, and you get a killer Ultimate in Magma Shell/Corrosive armor that basically makes you invincible for a short time, which is great in a pinch.

And as a dark elf, you almost offset the increase in damage vampires take in higher stages while buffing your flame damage output.

Actually, I respectfully disagree with that. You'd notice a significant difference in damage output and sustain between an Altmer/Dunmer, and an Orc, for example. The difference would be noticeable if you chose a non-optimal race for what you want (magicka or stamina).

Dunmer. Go Magicka. Level up using Destro/restro. Get at least 1 5 piece set. Light armor. I’d go with Seducer. Once you hit cp 160 go sword and board/ sword and board. Wear 5 piece Seducer/5 piece desert rose until you really learn magdk and can theory-craft something on your own. Get Valkan Skoria or Bloodspawn 2 piece monster sets.

Avoid sets like Sloads or Zaan or you just wont ever get good. Good luck.

I use this build. It's ridiculously fun and hits very hard. Both sets are overland, so easy to farm or buy from guild traders.
He's an imperial in the video, but I use dark elf. My HP is about 2k lower, but I have better magicka recovery, and it works well for me and my group.
Hope this helps! Enjoy your DK either way, and welcome to eso!
