Weapon skill line not showing up

So I'm leveling a new character, I use a one handed weapon to start leveling it up for 1 day now and it doesn't show up at all. I tried killing monsters with it, I handed down quests with it, finished BG with it (in hand) and the skill line won't show up. What's wrong here?

Try putting something in your off-hand, like a shield or a second weapon

Another weapon will get you DW, a shield will get you SnS

You have to use one hand and shield to trigger the skillline for sword and board.
Using both weapons will trigger dual wield skill line.
