Any tips for getting the Soul Lock passive to proc?

This passive seemed like a great idea since I'm always accumulating empty soul gems and hate putting soultrap on my bar, but I'm not really noticing it working.

I have 2 sp in it so it should proc 10% of the time. It says weapon ability.... Does this mean light and heavy attacks won't work?

I use a Desto staff, and the aoe ability is the only one I naturally use. Does any other work better?

Basically, just looking for any tips or suggestions that I'm doing something wrong.

It seemed like there were threads years ago about this passive being bugged, but nothing recently so I'm hoping it just something simple I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

I think it's fair to say that, since launch, so long as you have one point into the passive you'll always accumulate filled soul gems at a rate much greater than you use them. Unless you really use a lot of them for some reason, and the only way I can see that happening is if you're doing dungeons with really terrible players.

I currently have 2619 filled and 2986 empty soul gems across all 15 characters. I did nothing in particular to accumulate these. They just sort of pile up... passively. Unless you're always in Cyrodiil.

It's not so much about using them as it is about just filling and selling them. i run alot of dohlmen's and I think also get lots from doing all daily crafting writs across multiple alts.

After running some more testing, I'm not doubting the 10% as much as I'm just realizing I would need better weapon abilities to finish off mobs. Seems like light and heavy attacks also work.

I'm not sure the passive always works because I often wind up with a stack or more of unfilled gems on a character that has the passive. Then I end up going to a dolmen and filling them the old fashioned way.

Yea, It was worth giving it a shot, but its probably not something I'll hold onto the next time I respec unless I just have nothing else pending.

I am honestly not sure what it means when it says 'weapon ability'. All I can relate is my experience with it.

Khajiit stamina Nightblade DW/DW - hardly ever had an empty soul gem as she kept filling them. Most of her attack skills were from the weapon line.

Dark Elf magicka Warden Destro/Restro - has more empties than filled but does manage to get some filled on occasion. Only has one weapon attack on the bar currently and it is an area DoT. With her I feel that the few she does manage to fill are from the light / heavy attacks that are weaved in.

If all you want is to quickly fill soul gems, go to Vaults of Madness and get yourself a set of Oblivion's Edge armor.

5 items: When you kill an enemy, you fill an empty Soul Gem and heal for 20-1720 Health.

As far as your questions go - in my experience any of the 5 skills from any of the weapon skill lines work equally. And the ultimates. They have to land the killing blow. Light/heavy attacks also count, I believe (based on how often I get filled soul gems via lightning heavy attacks with Blockade). Things like Burning Light passive for Templars, Implosion for Sorcs, etc. will prevent Soul Lock from triggering.

Use nothing but weapon skill line skills on your bar, and you'll have more gems than you can handle in short order. Go places that have a LOT of weak enemies to kill quickly (like Skyreach) for max efficiency.

You have to get the kills with either weapon abilities or light and heavy attacks. As in the final hit has to be one of those. Class skills or guild skills will not work.

With a destro staff, utilizing force pulse as an “execute” can be effective for proccing that passive. Elemental blockade does great AoE damage, but often doesn’t result in many killing blows which are required for the passive.

That's good for a stam character, but looks like OP is magicka. On my magblade, when I need to fill more soulgems, I just find groups of mobs that are easy to kill and just use ele blockade and pulsar. That kills stuff fast enough, and with the destro passive, you also get magicka back when you kill an enemy with a destro ability. with that, I can keep this up forever..

I have a run I do every couple of days to steal some. I fill 20-30 every few hours of playtime, and that's just 1 point in the skill.

I have a Stamplar dedicated to filling gems, and wearing this setup. It takes no time to fill a stack and any grind spot.
