What is your latency.

I think the name is latency. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have the option on for FPS and Latency. Is latency another name for "ping"? Is this what people go off to see how fast they are with ESO? I have a latency around 110 on a good day to about 150 and the game plays well for me on most occasions. One time I had it like 400 and the game was unplayable. Is this what I go off to see if my connection is good or not?

What is considered a good latency or ping? Any ways of improving it? I am hard wired to my router instead of using WiFi but I see no difference either way. I upgraded my internet package. It's the fastest I can get right now. It's about 229 mps was the test it just told me. Game does play a bit faster but not much different when it was around 150mps. Is there anything else I can do to get ESO playing faster or is that just the servers now I have to rely on?

Also what is your latency (or ping if that is called). I am curious to see how people play since I never seen this mentioned before and trying to learn other aspects of the game I never noticed before. Just found out about this feature that I never used before so curious now of something I didn't know before.

My lag/ping is way high (1.5 seconds on a good day, 2+ on a bad one) because I only have satellite. It's not hard to play - but it can make it very difficult to kill something fast - and goddess forbid my non-pet girls have to take on three or more mobs....

On average, 110 to 150 isn't going to hurt you in this game. 400 may seem unplayable, but people with -steady- connections have played with much higher ping. The killer with latency isn't the actual distance to the server, and therefore communication delay until you get up into the two second mark, it's the jitter. Jitter, which the ingame latency counter doesn't always reflect because it doesn't update more than once every few seconds on-screen, is when you're spiking high and dropping low in rapid succession.

You're pretty much as good as it's going to get right now.

Average is 103ms today. I had a spike of 1325ms, but I don't actually recall that, so it might have been while I was AFK.

The previous time I played for any length of time (7/31) it was an average of 109ms with a max of 282ms.

The average is high for me by about 10ms.

Outside of cyro 80-95, steady. Inside cyro now around 140 average, used to be 110ish average. More spiking to 300-400 (only cyro), this has been the normal since Summerset.

Yes. Both of them are measuring one thing: the "round-trip" time from your computer to the ESO server, and then back again. Technically, "latency" includes time being processed by the server, "ping" is a specific diagnostic test at the network level, and "round-trip time" is the network level thing that "ping" measures. :)

Yes. This is generally what people talk about when they talk about "lag" and stuff. It is also what you generally want to test if you need to work out "is your network the cause of your problem or not", though network is not the only component of overall latency.

https://pingplotter.com/fix-your-network is a pretty good guide to checking for network issues, and how to get them resolved. If you are having latency issues, or lag problems, then I advise you start there.

The problem may or may not be network related, but it is quick and easy to find out for sure, so you can avoid wasting time on unproductive efforts to solve things.

For online gaming, <= 40ms for "twitch" games like shooters, <= 120ms for MMOs, <= 250ms is on the edge of "comfortable to play" for MMOs, and anything above you definitely notice. You can adapt, but it sure is difficult. If the latency is variable (eg: goes up and down a bunch) then you will feel it much more, and it will suck much more, than steady but high latency.

You just did all the things that generally can help. The good news is that the PingPlotter guide also shows you where the latency is happening, so you can figure out if there is anything else that could be done ... but mostly, no. WiFi, and congested home to ISP links are the most common causes.

If you are very lucky, you might find something in the ISP network that is causing excess latency, and get them to fix it. For values of "lucky" that are all about how easy it is to get something fixed. ;)

    outside cyrodil, 100-150.

in cyrodil it's insanely variable. skills, doors, mounts, attacks, siege, pots, swaps, target acquisition, etc, all seem to be based on some arcane form of rng.

I was playing at 50-60 until the nanosecond Morrowind went live. Now, I'm sitting at 90-100, with regular spikes into the 400s.

Not unplayable (and I DO realize I've got it good compared to others) but I'm genuinely curious as to why my connection was so fast and smooth from launch until Morrowind.

Mine has been about 110 lately, it used to fluctuate between 60 and 110.

I do notice something after I log my steam account... My latency ends up being 300-700 when I come back on main account, until I turn steam off. I never seem to notice if it's high when on the steam account because I'm just logging for daily then getting back out as I dont really play that account anymore.

How do you play? By that when it happens to me, I can't even attack. I can move, I can jump but I can't attack, I can't cast magic spells, I can't even go through doors. I can't even pick up flowers. Then about 30 seconds or two minutes later everything "jumps" together all at once. Is this what you go through all the time?

You git gid. Us oceanics live with that ping. Were use to it so we dont notice any problems. Makes certain content and builds difficult but we find ways around that.
