Sorry if this is a noob question, but I've only recently completed the Maelstrom Arena and am wondering how to start the veteran version, cos I can't seem to find the option?

In your group setting you need to change it to verteran like you would with dungeons.

Is the veteran version much harder than the normal version?

Yes normal is like a 2/10. And VMA a 10/10.

Its a pretty common complaint from people that the difficulty jump from normal to vet is too severe. Not in so far that they should nerf vet, but rather that normal should prepare you more for vet.

Normal prepares you pretty well for the mechanics of the rounds. Normal also prepares you pretty well for the enemy spawns, and recognizing when certain enemies spawn is pretty important in Vet.

Normal doesn't prepare you for the difficulty spike on Vet. Priority Adds have to be focused ASAP or you will die, fast. Adds you burned in normal are much tougher and hit harder. Its much more intense, and you'll want to use those sigils.

Or to put it another way, my first time on Normal, I didn't die until I missed a mechanic on Arena 6. On Vet, I died a ton on the first round until I learned the spawns, how to prioritize them, and how to burn down the boss with his adds. It gets a lot easier the more you practice though.

Am I the only one who is surprised every single time by the difference in difficulty between normal and vet, I have been playing this game for over 2 years and yet to this day I am surprised by the spike in difficulty from normal to vet.

It's like from "Can-I-Play-Daddy?" to "Uber" in just one step LOL

    Normal be like

I'm working through my first go at vet at the moment - stuck on boss lvl 7. It's horrific - I've been within 100k more times than I can remember. I know exactly what I need to do but it always falls apart - and I know full well that this level is easier than the previous 2, but I still keep messing it up - usually something really careless too. What's really annoying is when you actually defeat each boss it seems really easy, but the 100 attempts before that are soooo frustrating.

The first time I think you need to stick to the mechanics pretty slavishly, especially round 5 onwards. If you try and burn through it just won't work.

But I think it probably improves your game more than anything else, especially sustain and self-healing.

Most of the YouTube guides give no real indication of how important it is to prioritise certain adds - very often not the boss, who will one shot you every single time if you don't deal with them immediately.

And use sigils all the time!
