need help with an odd idea

ok, this might sound weird.

i am going to buy a house finally. i want to make a giant chess board. i know a ton of furnishing designs but i have never made any .

so i would need 32 black squares and 32 white squares, and then i would need to figure out the pieces themselves.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Pick a small square table top and a alinor ballroom floor, put tables down for dark squares, leave nude spaces for alternate colors squares. Figurines and knick knacks or bottles for your chests pieces

This idea has me excited because my profession is chess coach! I teach juniors.

I would make it giant, on the Coldharbor estate, because the cement tiles there are already quite light.

Constellation tiles for squares. Or, the Argonian inscribed tiles. Although I like Sticky Paws idea of tables, much cheaper!

Some ideas to start you off:

Rooks = Alinor Wide Marble Display Stand
Knights = obviously Horse mounts, or you could try the Khajiit guardian statues.
Bishops = High Elf streetlights, or if you can afford it the tips of Mundus stones.
Pawns = Snowswept Shard (white) , Slated Grey stone (black)
King & Queen you would likely want to use smaller statues that look the part.

Keep in mind that you don't have to set the chessboard up fully, necessarily. You could have a middle game in progress, with a real position set up on the board. Perhaps a famous position, like the Fischer Opera match!

Anyways, please keep us up to date, as I'd love to swing by and see the finished product!

i started messing with it yesterday. i settled on the big house in bankorai.

I firs tried with the alinor ballroom floor, but it isnt working. i wish the housing editor had a top down view it would make it easier.

i settled on the high elf verdant table for the white squares. now i have to find the same sized table in a darker color. but now i am kind of liking the tile idea. can those tiles be crafted or just bought ?

Love the idea -- a life-sized chess board in ESO would be epic.

There are quite a few achievement statues you could use to spice it up for the chessmen!

Depending on what you decide to use as chessmen, you could use the vendor bricks (they have a smallish square end and come in varying shades of grey).

I love the constellation tiles but you'd probably need to have an underlying surface be the contrast colour - they are not as easy to tell apart at a glance as black vs white if you just used two different tile types.

That being said I love the "fantasy" chess sets where one side is elves the other ogres and stuff like that - you might be able to do something like that.

The Constellation tiles are purchased from the Housing Acheivement vendor in Rivenspire. They are rather light.
The Argonian tiles can be crafted, enchant recipe.

Might I suggest R_K's, Magic Carpet for a top down view. It's excellent! A small learning curve for me, as I kept falling off, but once you get going, it's a smooth ride. You will be able to get up there and check out your work as you go.

Don't give up, or get disheartened. Every work of art, every amazing project takes a lot of tweeking and time.

Ohhhh, and try turning things (thrones, tiles, carpets, etc.) upside down,. They often make excellent tiles, particularly if you are digging them into the ground.

these are awesome.

i bought tiles from the furnisher guy in rawlka but they are too small and the contrast is not stark enough.

i asked about the constellation tiles and was told they only come from the golden furnisher guy --- good to know i can get them in rivenspire.

one question ---- the argonian tiles --- do you happen to know the name and color of the blue print ?

You could flip it over for the light as well, then you’d have the exact shape and size for each position. Just a thought:)

If it wasn’t light enough for your liking, perhaps you could sit the High Elf table you mentioned inside. That way you’d maintain the measurements.

I’m so excited to see this when you’re done; sounds like an awesome idea!

sadly i found out after having these made that they are twice the size of the other suggested piece.

finally settled on a short alinor column and a faded table top for the squares. the board itself is set up. now i just need to figure out the pieces and what i want to do with the rest of the forsaken stronghold.

The easiest way to upload an image on any type of forum (including ESO) is to create an account in Imgur upload your pictures there and then get a link from that website.

Once you have the link, click on Attach Image you have on top of the Leave a Reply in ESO forums, paste your in the popup that comes up, hit preview to see if you got the picture right, if all is okay you can post.

Hope that helps, and sorry I am not very good at giving written instructions.

still working on the pieces. i found candles at the coldharbor housing furnisher guy that would make decent pawns for one side.
