Okay I am level 29,I have the expansions morrowind and the ones released before that ,I haven't played in months........

But for the life of me I cannot seem to figure out which of the quests are main story quests and which are perhaps just side quests ?

Excellent game, played a few hours this evening for the first time in ages, tempted to buy the new expansion but I have barely scratched the surface of the expansions I already own...

There should be a 'Main Quest' section in your journal, there's a list down the left-hand side. Although if you're playing on console it might be arranged differently. It's a bit all over the place since One Tamriel, can be hard to keep track. If you're not sure what to do next you can always try going to the Harbourage and speaking to the Prophet. And welcome back!

Thank you for your reply, I play on PC,my journal just seems to name areas with quest titles I have picked up in that zone ... Would it basically say "Main quests" as the title with the quests detailed below with a list of quests ?

Is it possible that I have not collected the next main quest, making my quest list show no main quests?

With me owning various expansions how does the game know which area I am trying to complete first or is there only one way through the main story ?

I have switched my pc off for the evening as it's midnight here in the UK,but I shall check my journal in the morning.

I kind of want to power through the expansion I owned then by the latest expansion, perhaps doing the side quests later .

    'Main Quest'
the same as the region headings,
Council of the Five Companions is the last, then it disappears until you progress things to and in Coldharbour

Main Quest this includes the steps that you need to do for it

Okay cool, so the main story regardless of my expansions is it all played in order from the first release through to the latest expansion installed ?

The main story only takes place in the base game ( strictly your factions 5 regions and Coldharbour) with Cadwells pushing you through the region stories for the other 2 factions
The DLC have their own stories like the region missions in the base game

Okay just for example, how would a morrowind expansion main story quest be detailed in my journal?

I have visited morrowind and picked up quests.

By main quest do you mean the questline with the Prophet? As that's the main quest.

Then there is your Alliance quest.

SO base game with a new character I do the following -

    Complete Main Quest
    Complete Alliance Quest
Fighters / Mages / Undaunted lines
    Clear zones of -
    Lore Books (magika toons)
    Skyshards
    Delves
    Delve group event
    Dolmens

This is a fun way to explore every zone, get everything you need (skill points etc) get huge AP - and never repeat content to level.

My first pass in 2015 I did EVERYTHING in every zone. Every side quest. And it confused me - one minute i'm in the Harbourage with the old dude, then i'm battling Molag Ball then i'm defending Devons Watch from DC invasion then i'm resucing Guar and picking flowers for some NPC and to be honest - it confused the heck out of me.

Back to your point, there should be a sub heading of Main Quest in the Journal however. Unsure on PC if you can hide it by mistake. Try porting to the Harbourage (you can fast travel there) see whats going on. Or go to a main town starter zone - he should appear.

Okay, Just travelled back to Harborage, I went to the cave where I would normally be given quests but no quest is appearing in the cave, no one appeared either to give me a quest.

I checked in the main town also no new quests showing.

nothing in my journal quotes as "Main quest", I have checked each quest individually to see if it quoted main in the text on the right-hand side....

Is it possible if a forum member joined my party can they check my quest list or look at my character to offer some help and advice.

I honestly have nothing showing as "main quest" all my quests are yellow if that means anything?!?!?

I do have some quests that say "Solo" those are guild quests, the rest of the quests appear to be multiplayer optional.

I just want to do the storyline and not be lost in side quests but nothing seems to state what type of quest each one is...

This is rather ambiguous. The only quests that are titled Main Quest and listed as such in your journal are the ones with the prophet (and they can't be abandoned), the first of which is Soulshriven in Coldharbour. Before you complete that, the Harborage will be empty.

I have the impression that you are talking about the main stories of individual zones. They are not marked explicity in your journal, and are just listed under the zone you are in. For Morrowind content they are easy to recognize, however, since their names all start with "Divine ...". For other zones it's not so easy. You might want to take a look at the quest achievements for each zone. They will give you a good hint as to what is a main story quest.

And some advice for Morrowind - don't just do the main story. It is set up to bring you to other places to explore. If you concentrate on only doing the divine something quests, it will seem extremely short (I did it once and it felt disappointing because of this).

    I hope that helps you.

Thank you all for your advice, is it worth trying to abandon all my quests ? The reason been I presume if the quest is a main quest then it will not let me abandon a main quest ?

If you started playing your character with Morrowind, you'd have been given the Morrowind Starter Tutorial; and then you'd have had a "hooded figure" quest which would direct you to a Benefactor, and to the original Main Quest tutorial. If you haven't done that quest, I don't think the Prophet & Harborage quests will show up. But that's just a guess, it's been awhile since I started a Morrowind-era character.

I am wanting to just do main quests and not side quests at the moment as I am very behind on the main story, but as mentioned I cannot work out what is a main quest and what is a side quest based on my quest list.

Also for future reference when picking up a quest, how do I know if it is just a side quest and not the main story quest ?

Well, if you meant the Main Quest of the Game, it looks like you are in the middle of the Coldharbor segment. Follow the questline from The Army of Meridia and finish Coldharbor before you can continue with the Main Quest.

Main quest - you have quest "army of Meridia", so probably you did most of main line, and now need to rescue a few groups in Coldharbor to be able to go to the next step of Main quest and confront Molag Bal.

"Main quests" in different zones - I assume you mean the storyline for each zone - cannot be distinguished in the Journal, you can look up them on UESP or wiki.

Apparently, you've done all of the Harborage main quest. Your current main quest are the ones in Coldharbour (most notably, Army of Meridia). I'm not sure where you stand in your Alliance quest line; it may be that at some point, you need to finish that as well. I'm not sure, though. Which alliance are you?

You don't seem to have started any Morrowind quests, yet; they'd be listed under Vvardenfell. Go to Seyda Neen wayshrine for the region-specific main quest.

Tagging on to this, how do you know which quests in your journal are the 'main' quests of the specific zone? I've always wondered this myself, as I don't usually do all zone quests in one sitting, and can wind up collecting plenty of side quests in each zone. Then coming back to it, I forget which quest is the one to progress that zone's story.

You don't. There's not a way to tell in game. You can look at the achievememts for that zone or at the tab for Cadwell's Silver and Gold, but the journal by itself doesn't tell you what's a Grahtwood main story quest and what's a side quest in Grahtwood.

A semi-reliable way is that the zone main quests will usually be tied to the major map icons in a given area. Those will usually end up granting a skillpoint, too.

If an NPC runs up to you on the entry point of a zone, pretty good odds that's the one you want. The side quest givers will usually let you track them down.

Once you finish the first part, they'll usually grant the next in line. If they don't head to the next major map icon and look for the next giver.

It's not completely foolproof, but it works pretty well (at least unless you start zone hopping, then it can get convoluted real quick.)

Did you start game in Morrowind or Sumerset? In that case the main quest don't start at once for reasons.
Else the prophet will contact you once your done with one part, if you dodged him you can go back to harborage and pick it up

I forgot about this part, too.

Main story quests will trigger every 5 levels, usually when you port somewhere or enter a major city.

Once you roll over to 30, you'll likely get contacted again for the next set of quests until you hit 35.

The one exception to this is the point where you get directed to go to
    Coldharbor
once there, hitting the major map icons will progress things in a fairly logical order for you.

    Good luck!
