ESO is an RPG with some long-term character development stuff in place.

There's a passive in each skill line that should help cut down on the time; eventually it will let you research more than one item at a time, and cap the research time to 30 days. Also if you obtain some Master Writs, either through Writ rewards or bought at a guild trader, you can also turn in vouchers for scrolls that will speed up the research time a little (note that there's a cooldown).

I get that they need that
Still none the less seems f2pish
Maybe they should add more long term content instead of stretching things out
Ah well, i get the point just dont agree

Yes...to about a year to go to a full researched toon, even investing in speeding it up and running it continuously.

Fortunately, there’s not usually a dire reason to be a 9 trait crafter. My approach would be to focus on working it to six traits. Do divines, infused, training on body pieces. Then after you hit six, just be casual about it.

It is per item, but also bear in mind that there are passives that reduce the research time and can let you research up to 3 items per crafting skill line, with the exception of Jewelrycrafting, which can only ever be one item at a time, but then there's only 2 items to research, so no biggie.

Having a full 9 traits researched on an item isn't usually that big of a deal, the most useful craftable sets are usually 6 trait sets.

If you do decide to research everything, there are a few traits that I believe should be done as a priority.

Armor (Heavy, Medium, Light):Divines, Infused, Sturdy, Impenetrable, Training

Metal Weapons: Nirnhoned*, Infused, Precise, Sharpened, Training

    Bow: Nirnhoned*, Precise, Sharpened, Training

    Destro Staves: Infused, Charged, Training

    Resto Staves: Powered, Training

    Shields: Infused, Impenetrable, Training

    Jewelry: Infused, Bloodthirsty, Triune

*The Nirnhoned trait is probably the best trait on most weapons for DPS output, but it can also be very expensive for a new player, typically 14-20K for a Nirnhoned weapon for research and then an additional 8-14K to make the weapon yourself. Assuming you don't farm for the trait material. I wouldn't worry too much about Nirnhoned until you can comfortably afford it, or until you have your endgame gear.

Within a few days of release I realized the scope of research, which was much worse at that time. My solution was to spread the research out over 7 characters.

Research is only a time sink for those that want all items researched on 1 charcater for master writ purposes or just because.

once you have established characters it makes more sense to focus all crafting on one character. makes gathering motifs and recipes a lot cheaper for that grand master crafter.

It takes a while. Like feeding horses (riding lessons it is called now.) Just make sure to research the traits you might actually transmute stuff to first. The rest is not a big deal as there are now great drop set alternatives to every crafted set so not being able to craft a 9 trait set is irrelevant.

I would also advise you to put all crafting on the same, original main, toon. Just deal with having to get more skill point to do it as it is much more convenient to have all crafting expertise on one toon.
I am currently worried for the future of ESO. Population seems like it is in free fall and the cancellation of the North America in-person gathering feels very much like pulling the plug. Kudos on fixing the in-game economy though. Clearly whatever gold shenanigans were happening the last couple years are fixed.

You would have really hated it in the beginning then.

There were four basic horse types. Totally vanilla/nothing special. Speed/starting stats higher for speed. Inventory/starting stat higher for that. Stamina/starting stats higher for that. You had to feed your horse every day; oats, apples, hay. One food was for speed, that let you max out that stat. One for stamina, one for inventory. Divines help you if you fed the wrong food because you wouldn't have the maxed that stat at the end of the process. So basically if you wanted a fast horse, or wanted maxed out inventory space, or the stamina version, you had to buy 3 horses. And feed each one to max the stats.

The research is a breeze compared to that.

Right, and so if you wanted to go fast, you rode one horse. If you were farming, you'd use a different horse for the maxed bag space. You couldn't have 60/60/60 on any mount.

Thing is, it takes less than two.months, really a bit longer that one month to learn 6 traits on the items you use. If you limit your initial research to items you use and save the rest for later. 6 traits can make the best overall sets in the game. 7 to 9 Trait sets are Niche items suited for specific builds.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
