Playable Virtual Instruments

I invite anyone here to come play on XB-NA and turn on area voice chat in Vulkhel Guard, Rawl'kha, Davon's Watch or one of a half-dozen other cities and I guarantee you will hear some idiot blasting some form of "music" (instrumental or other) over their mic - usually with a group of scantily clad nincompoops dancing around and spouting off racially charged verbiage.

Wait a minute, does this mean console users actually have something that PC players do not? Lawd have mercy! Oh that's right, most of us don't like it. Makes sense, I guess.

I remember this from LOTRO, it was awesome! :) Think I played the game only for a few months, bust mostly I spent my time playing ring of fire in the various player hubs.

I wish when more than 1 person in a group plays an instrument they all played the same song in sync.

I remember in LOTRO you could download music files to play different songs that were pre-made. Some even had the music broken down to each instrument. If you were in a party and all had the same song with the respected instrument equipped. The party leader would give a que to the other party members and the music would sync up, the party would play the song together. I even remember once seeing an orchestra play a set of music in Bree. It was an amazing sight.

As a musician and composer, I’d love to play Elder Scores Online.

Just give me (all of us) the option to mute other compositions if we choose... Last thing I need is to walk into a bank and get Rick-rolled by a bunch of orcs in wedding dresses.

I've been asking about this for a long time and @soundmaster did express interest in it.

Seems like giving API access to samples of a couple octaves of each instruments' 12 tones would at least allow addon makers to create a sequencer. Not all that much work on ZOS's side would be required.

Getting anything added to the base game would probably take at least 12 months to implement and that's if no work goes into fixing bugs already in the game. That said, I'm thinking the first big music festival in Cyro will be Gank-Fest in 2020!!

No! It was horrendous in LOTRO

actually - it was fantastic in LOTRO - the playable music systems was one of the most extensively utilized emergent content systems of LOTRO (proobably the most utilized, although the horse races were fun too), and it brought hundreds if not thousands of people together. As with any music scene, there were posers and wannabes, but it also provided an outlet for thousands of "artists" of all kinds - from genuine musicians to digital composers to performance artists arranging/choreographing shows of all kinds.

it was an absolutely fantastic way for members of the community to gather together and have fun, compete sometimes in a respectful and professional way, show off, and generally gave the entire community an opportunity to be part of something that the devs only casually had to be involved with that created content that appeared nowhere else in the game

I'd love to see a playable music system emerge in ESO as well - although I doubt the community will embrace it quite as enthusiastically as it was welcomed in LOTRO (there was a mindset to being a LOTRO player that I feel contributed to the growth of the music community), but I can always hope - it would improve MY experience in ESO by an order of magnitude if we could include some honestly cooperative entertainment community events that such a system might encourage

so, ESO devs, if you're reading any portion of this thread - it's worth the effort - LOTRO is an excellent model, and if you'd like to encourage people of that mindset to not only open up a new venue of entertainment options for your game as well as possibly start joining your game community, then I suggest you give it very strong consideration

    Hey there, @FrazzleRastur,

Playable instruments, playable in the sense that the player can actually create music, sounds like an awesome idea! We can definitely imagine the amazing things the community could create with functional instruments.

That being said, unfortunately, we can't guarantee your idea will make it into the game but it's a great suggestion and we hope you'll continue to share any suggestions or feedback you may have in the future.

Please, no. Not unless the use of these instruments is strictly restricted to inside private instances like player homes.

In my experience giving any musical instrument to a novice is a recipe for torture, even if it is a well-intentioned novice.

Giving musical instruments to eleven million trolls to play on the street has got to be some kind of crime against humanity that should be punishable under international law.

Relax, that ZOS mesg is the canned response to things like this. It is the dev equivalent of your parents hanging your macaroni owl on the refrigerator.

XD ... yeah, but at least they liked my macaroni craft XD

I remember with LOTRO you could use a txt file coded with ABC notation scripting. You could then load that script into the console to play a song. I remember the U2 With or Without You sounded nice with the lute instrument. There was a LOTRO related site where you could download scripting txt files that was transcoded. I think there was an option to sync the script with multi instruments so that a band could play as well. I think there was also an option to "free play" notes by tapping on your keyboard once you were in the play instrument mode.

And you still can, the Spring Music Festival April 2018 went well, and Weatherstock X will happens in July again (10th anniversary)

But for this, you need a community, a real one loving music and willing to share and spend time. This is a different game and different community.
I love this one too, dont mind me, but this is nothing to compare with the people i met on Landroval and other servers, as it involves a more lot of RP than on ESO :)

    Yes, Landroval RP FTW <3

Well the Midi controller or keyboard sounds neat, but that would leave out the consoles(keyboard does work). Maybe being able to arrange a music sheet that will auto play with the character emote would work.

LOL music station 125 writs not bad but I want the A Tune-able station.... sorry

Oh yeah... I forgot ESO has a console side too :(
That would be hell to implement...

Some of the weird reactions are leading me to believe that more detail is necessary, because I can't imagine anyone seriously protesting the addition of a system like this into the game. It would only attract more players, and increase the amount of time people spend socializing and organizing social events. So here's to cover the "omg no that's awful" people, based on the way it's set up in LOTRO:

    1. You don't have to hear it. There are toggles in settings that allow you to put the volume of player generated music to zero.
    2. Play-by-keyboard is only one way to use the instruments, and in LOTRO I never encountered anyone actually performing that way as it's ponderous to do with number keys and lacking a full scale. Pre-written .abc files are used, which can be composed from scratch for original pieces, or even made from converted MIDI pieces.
    3. Novices invariably download popular, proven pieces shared with the community by experienced, talented writers, so nobody's ears get tortured unless someone's deliberately trolling.
    4. Who in the world would EVER try to inflict something on other players that would ruin their exp....oh wait.

Nevermind. The one thing we can't emulate from LOTRO is their community. But seriously you can turn the music off so that even a determined troll can't make you hear his bad music.

We can't turn off player instruments alone in this game NOW, a fact of which I am reminded every single time I am in a crowd of people because invariably someone has to play their lute and then are immediately joined by a floutist and another lutist, both of which are playing completely different songs...we've already overachieved in the "hellish ear torture" department, so there's really nothing more anyone can do to hurt us that way.

You don't have to play solely via keyboard in LOTRO, you can play through any instrument that has a MIDI interface and is configurable. But it would still leave console players out :(

Oh, well - even if ESO doesn't have this feature it's still super fun to play and LOTRO is still a thing - as is Weatherstock :)

Thank you all for the information.

@FrazzleRastur just as an aside, I logged on to my LOTRO char 2 nights ago just for fun and immediately happened upon a large gathering and impromptu concert happening outside the Prancing Pony by a musical guild. When they were finished I then hopped up on a rock and put on a short set with my bagpipes to the crowd's delight. Good fun!

I suggested this in the pre-closed beta, then again in the closed beta. I got the same basic responses...interesting idea, yadda yadda. Unfortunately I don’t think it ever reached anyone who had tried, and liked LOTROs neat system, and had enough interest to bring it up during a planning meeting, much less enough passion about it to convince the suits.

And frankly, considering how they have allowed the console GUI to languish for years in mediocrity, I just don’t think they have the manpower to emulate, much less innovate in this area.

Thats not to trash ZOS, I think they do lots of things right - its just my take. Understaffed in GUI/mechanics coders.
