Crafting & Character Grinding

Hi folks,

I wondered if it is worth having a character specifically created just for crafting and provisioning and to create items for my main (current) character plus any others I create?

I don't see the point of grinding every trait and skill line on every character just to get the same results - I can level up research gear and provisioning alongside others and the actual PvE and PvP chars can use the stuff I make....or I can find a guild and sell it.

Any views?

Sure, a crafting alt can save some time and energy from having to jam the 125+ skill points for crafting onto your main. Plus a crafter can end up carrying tons of garbage...so if it’s not one you go play with, it’s okay that their inventory might be kinda full. There’s not really a downside to that other than having to log in and out of a secondary character.

Of note, the provision and alchemy items a crafting character makes can be used by any other characters for daily writs. So for these, if you wanted you could make stacks for your other characters to grab and turn in these quests for a little extra cash. I do lower rank provision writs because the lower level recipes are actually really valuable in guild stores...purples are 15-20k on my server.

I personally have always favored a magicka nightblade for craft character. With retreating maneuvers plus concealed weapon they’re super fast...plus soon I’ll put swift gear on mine. And they’ll still need to farm lots of shards for skill points. Infinite cloak means they can speed sneak through entire regions and delves and get the posts really fast.

The crafting grind was wy too much for me to do more than once! I converted one toon into my crafter and respected all skill points to crafting. After one tam, I did choose a few other toons so they could mine different resources so I can get raw mats for lvls 1-50 and 160.

If you have the time for it, being able to complete daily crafting writs with many or all your characters provides significant rewards, especially when crafting at the maximum level. The reward surveys and master writs are the major prizes, but a constant supply of repair kits and occasional rare material rewards help as well. With CP160+ characters, the gold return is good as well. With around a two to three minute time to login, solve writs, switch characters, I make somewhere around 50k a day just from the daily writ gold rewards.

Surveys are the fastest and easiest way of harvesting large quantities of raw materials. Master writs are good for the voucher rewards, but also provide massive xp, making solving a bunch of them at once one of the quickest level grinds in the game.

If you don’t want to hassle with too much of a crafting grind, you can just do the consumables ones: provisions, enchantments, potions. Those are very quick to solve, or you can pre-craft the required materials and hold them until the daily writ calls for them.

Provisioning is actually unique in that the writs from level 2 to level 5 are generally more rewarding, as the blue and purple reward recipes that are occasionally given can be worth quite a bit for sale in a guild store. Level 6 writs do drop psijic ambrosia recipe fragments rarely, but the price of that recipe is not that high anymore.

I did crafting first on my 1st character then started replicating it on the others, first only the main passive, then research and quality improvement passives as well as I got more skill points. 8 of my 14 level 50 characters are basic crafters only (main passive) and one of the other 6 started out like that and now it's fully developed.

It takes time but the advantages in the long run are worth it. For example I get >70K from crafting writs a day with a profit margin of ~70% when accountimg for material costs (except Ancestor Silk others are cheap) so around 50K in profit. And that's not counting the upgrade materials, surveys (more upgrades from refining and refined materials) and master writs - I get ~2.8K vouchers per month on average.
