Update for Crashes/Freezing on Console

Hi all,

Today at 10am EDT, we’ll be disabling a feature on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 that could be causing some of the crashes and freezing you’ve been experiencing in higher populated areas, such as in Cyrodiil. This feature allows characters to load in faster, and by turning it off, you may run into solid black players more often as they continue to load into the area.

We do want to stress that you will still experience crashes and freezing, but our hope is this will help lessen the frequency of crashes. While we did some internal testing first, the best way to know if this is contributing is to simply disable it on the Live servers; it’s very important for you to let us know if you feel the frequency of crashing and freezing has lessened or stayed the same. Your feedback, along with crash reports we receive from first party, will help us determine if this feature should remain disabled or not.

Turning this feature off will not require any downtime, and we’ll let you know as soon as it’s disabled.

Looking forward, we do have some fixes coming in the next console incremental patch (about 3 weeks from now) that will resolve a lot of the crashes, freezing, and disconnects you’ve been experiencing lately; PC will receive any relevant fixes in future incrementals as well. Thanks for your ongoing patience while we work through these issues. We want to get these fixed as quickly as possible.

Thanks for the continued effort. Hope it helps, cause currently pvp is entirely unplayable.

3 more weeks for a more permanent fix isn't ideal, but I'll take what I can get at this point. Hopefully this will at least make PvP playable in the meantime.

@ZOS_GinaBruno does that mean that you have identified some potential fixes for PC Cyrodiil performance and are actively testing them? Or are you just saying that if there turn out to be any fixes for PC, they'll show up in a future incremental?

@ZOS_GinaBruno , thank you for the update but that 3-week delay is dangerously close to the Midyear Mayhem event. Any new or unresolved critical issues will not have enough time to be addressed by the player base on consoles. What precautions will you be taking with regards to possible continued poor performance when the event starts? Will you postpone it, lengthen it, etc.? The server stress will skyrocket as it normally does during these events - especially in Cyrodiil for this one.

I had freezing and stuttering while trying to use the map in Deshaan Tuesday night. The problem still exists and is everywhere. I do hope that the unfeaturing helps.

I'm aware of that, but the focus on Cyrodiil isn't unwarranted since there happens to be an event in Cyrodiil starting roughly on July 20th. A good portion of the crashes are taking place in Cyrodiil - not in dungeons or the overland content.

Update: The feature has been disabled. Again, please let us know if you feel the frequency of crashing/freezing has lessened or appears to be the same. Take your time and get a good feel for it first before posting.

Wow, another 3 weeks before a solid fix... cant swing making an exception and rushing certification on a fix?

I hope it's better after this update, and you know you're gonna hear from us either way.

I share the same concerns about the potential this has to completely ruin midyear mayhem if you fix isnt a fix. Care to comment on your plans for what's gonna happen if the update that's just under a month away doesnt take care of it? Will we have to wait another month to let you guys try again?

I haven't froze anywhere but pvp, stutters sometimes. Were talking serious hard freezes with no coming back.

Besides this "fix" happening just before the PVP Midyear Mayhem event and it's potential to not solve the main issues, this is also only 3-4 weeks from your next DLC drop which will certainly break everything again.

So, what Quality Control measures are you going to implement to stop this from happening EVERY time a new DLC drops?

(about the 10th time this question has been ask and gone unanswered)

So in three weeks there will be another patch that will "resolve a lot of freezing" A lot doesn't mean all. the (terrible) ap event is coming very soon. I'm not sure if you know but PS4 NA has 400+ man queues for that. there will be so many people packed into one place to leech fat ap ticks. I really you're ready for that. This is going to put us at about 6 weeks without a permanent fix... Really wish you guys cared about pvp at all.

-btw ps4 NA also has "invisible enemies" in pvp here you are dying to people you cant see. they pop in and out all laggy and can kill you-

It's just a side effect of freezing. Freeze, force close ESO, restart ESO and load char, do stuff before your char has loaded for other players.

After about an hour in Cyrodill, playing solo,, zerg surfing, defending keeps, and ganking, I see "no change" in performance relating to crashes.

Hmmm.. at least something is been tried for change and sticky. Thats positive.

The PS4 EU population has taken such BIG hit recent weeks so cannot say at the moment. Hopefully more players show up so we can see if this does anything.....

All of this could have been prevented if we had tested before releasing a product. But instead we release a product and now we are testing. I guess that makes us the guinea pigs. But i guess im suppose to be constructive so here it goes. Been in cyrodill for 2hrs now and nope crashes are still happening frecuency seems less but that's because its not prime time and im running solo but if you get close to big fights the same crashing rules apply. X1x

@ZOS_GinaBruno am I right in assuming that you want all feedback from today and beyond posted here? Do you guys still need videos of crashes? If we're stuck in a 3 week turnaround (which I strongly disagree with but whatever), we want to give you every chance to get it right, so can you specifically tell us what to look for and report on?

This just seems a bit vague. We are already irritated, and I dont think opinions on crashes from us who are going into this frustrated are gonna help a whole lot. Can you find out what info is important for a proper fix?

well, we're still here and most of us still logging in - i guess that's a good thing...

so many good fights in cyro are ending up - frozen - and, very disappointing...

i really really hope you all are able to successfully manage game performance better in the future (3 weeks from now :# )...
