So are templar tanks a thing?

I've always been interested in templar tanking with that whole holy paladin aesthetic, and providing healing to your group. I've been putting it off until now as I still have my dk tank, but it has been getting pretty boring lately.
So I've been thinking about making a templar tank. The thing is I don't want to spend time on a character that will only gather dust.
So how are templar tanks?

You will get mixed advice for this question, but simple answer is yes. They do exist and some people quite enjoy playstle.

I invite you join templar discord to talk to other templar tanks

I've been interested to delve into Ice Staff tanking on a Templar utilizing the Rune Focus to bring back magicka while blocking. The last month hasn't given me time to work on that build but its a definite possibility. The Psijic AoE cc affords a nice skill that is more sloppy than Talons but its at least something. Silver Leash makes it possible finally to be a Templar and essentially chain pull, a vital skill most teams what you to have as a tank.

It's okay. You have everything you need with Summerset and Templar has a few advantages when it comes to support. The two weaknesses of Templar tanks and the reason why I wouldn't take one for harder content like vet trials are stamina sustain and defensive scaling. The Templar lacks the percent resource scaling with stamina and health that other tanks have, making survivability and sustain on high health builds pretty bad. So if you want to primarily tank dungeons I think Templar is a good choice, if you want to do trials not so much.

Are you talking about a percentage based heal? Cause repentance is what you want but it comes at a way high price. Probably why you didn't mention it.

    Sure why not.

You can't really heal and tank on a Templar though, you just don't have the necessary resources.... only really do able on warden tank.

Healing and Stamina return, yes. Repentance is a great skill, in fact it's one of the reasons I would take a Templar for Dungeons. But it doesn't do anything in a 5 minute bossfight with pretty much no adds.

Yeah. Like I said, high price, the biggest "pain point" to me for the whole class. Stops stamplars and tankplar from being able to play together. I personally have been kicked from at least 5 random dungeons on my stamplar for this reason.

Argonian's Resourceful and Redguard's Adrenaline Rush help cover Templar Tank's biggest weakness, stamina sustain. Although in 4-man content your healer will typically help you out with resource recovery as well.

I think Redguard is a really interesting choice. You can successfully tank on any class on any and all content, however, some classes require a more extensive knowledge of the class and some more theorycrafting than others.

Honestly though, just play with what you want, I think Templars are a very viable option for tanks for even end-game content. The biggest obstacle as has been stated is the stamina sustain issue.

Two things that will help your stamina sustain.

    1. Be tanky enough that you can comfortably drop block and throw in some heavy attacks. Sustain solved.

    2. If you still want an oh crap save, use shield discipline on your front bar. Seven seconds of block where you can freely either heavy attack or spam taunt.

The fun part of Shield Discipline is that you can use the Meditate Psijic skill during it and can't be interrupted.

@Narvuntien OMG, that is awesome. I didn't know that.

Was playing around in the pts, had ritual of retribution up, with swarm mother pulling mobs from range with shield discipline. All the while meditate. It works but you are definitely very static.
