Dear ZOS: When is Vulkan coming?

The title says it all.

Almost all people playing this game have experienced crashes, lag and freezes due to draw calls load and attempts by ZOS to deal with the single threaded nature of the game. The only real solution to this issue is to use an API that is natively multiprocessor and since this application is not exclusively Microsoft based, now that MoltenVK is available to allow Vulkan to run on MACOS and iOS, the only solution to this issue is the Vulkan API.

So ZOS considering the MMO is very healthy and pulling in fat cash; when are you rewriting your graphics libraries to use this API?

Stop with the kludge fixes that break machines and invest in the real solution.

Thanks,

Laquey.

That's not how ZOS fixes things.

Their tried and true method is to meticulously write up all the ideas on a colored tarp with magic marker, then they gleefully bring the interns in and dunk them in a mixture of lukewarm oil and water, and then they toss the interns onto the tarp and let them romp about for a bit.

Whatever survives this hallowed trial on the tarp is what gets done. However, they also have a separate ritual to determine the schedule of how things get done. I haven't seen this, but rumor has it that it involves numerous pairs of pants, a wheelbarrow, and copious amounts of powdered chalk.

Other companies would do well to follow such a prime example of effective decision-making.

MoltenVK is an unofficially supported hacked together approach; if a high profile game like ESO started to use it then in all likelihood Apple would intentionally break compatibility with MoltenVK.

Apple is throwing their weight behind trying to force developers into using solely metal to target their platform which makes developers all the more wary of trying to use workarounds. As long as Apple remains hellbent on driving everyone else out of their walled ecosystem, even if it's to the detriment of their own users, there probably will always remain a large uncertainty for developers. Apple is afterall paid a rather hefty commission by its users to make all the decisions for them and free them from the hassle of having choices.

given that they haven't even incorporated Metal into the game in any way, I doubt any real overhaul like this is in this works.

At this point, it kind of feels like they are just maintaining things to soak up as much cash as they can before they shut the game down.

Sorry, I'm feeling a bit cynical and nihilistic tonight.

"On February 26, 2018 Khronos announced that Vulkan became available on macOS and iOS products through the MoltenVK library.[4] Valve announced that Dota 2 will run on macOS using the Vulkan API with the aid of MoltenVK,[5] and that they had made an arrangement with developer The Brenwill Workshop Ltd to release MoltenVK as open-source software under the Apache License version 2.0.[6]
On May 31, 2018 optional Vulkan support for Dota 2 on macOS was released. Benchmarks were available the following day.[7]
    "

If DOTA 2 is running on MACOS using MoltenVK with no interference from Apple then I think ESO would be just fine; DOTA is not a small game.

Oh right good point, I totally forgot about Dota 2 already using it. If Apple allows MoltenVK to stay a thing without sabotaging it then by all means it would make sense for Zenimax to target it with Vulkan.

You realise that only the Us is silly enough to use month / day / year format right?
the rest of the world uses the much more logical day / month / year

Because smallest to biggest was way too simple, practical, and easy. We said nope, also the US Military uses it. (American who grew up outside of the US and veteran, imagine my surprise when I didn't encounter the metric system)

It's not about "logic," it's about how we actually say dates out loud. In French, today is "le vingt-cinquième juin," so it makes sense to format it as 25/6/2018. But in American English, we say "June twenty-fifth," so we format it 6/25/2018. Both formats make sense in the context in which they're used.

In actual English ( ;) ) we also say “June 25th” yet use dd/mm/yyyy. (We actually use both forms when talking or writing the date long form, but we are awkward like that! :p Hence why many in the UK often still use a mixture of imperial and metric when talking about things (“I walked 20 metres to my car then drove 100 miles to my mates house. When I got there I made sure l took my 10 millilitres of medicine before drinking half a pint of coke.”)

As I understand it, as with many of the differences between UK and American English, the UK used to use mm/dd/yyyy format before America was founded, and it was us who changed later due to the influence of Europe. (Same with putting the letter u in words like colour, etc. It was the UK that changed, not the other way round as is often thought.)
