How do you know what scales with what?

So I’ve come across a number of abilities people mention on the forums as scaling with one thing or the other. How do you know?
As an example:
Pets damage scales with max Magicka
Purifying Light scales with Max Magicka
How could we know this doesn’t also scale with spell damage?
Naturally, a simple rule of thumb is that if it’s stamina based, it scales off stamina/weapon damage, and Magicka-based scales off Magicka/spell damage. But for the outliers that don’t tell you explicitly (the two above, or those that scale with max health), how do you know?
As an example:

How could we know this doesn’t also scale with spell damage?
