Can not connect to game server. Not using Steam. PC, EU.

Since yesterday when the Steam issues began I can not fully login even though I don't use Steam for launching ESO. I can log in so much as I can see my characters but when I select any of them and click play I just see the zone loading screen and after a short while I get an error saying "Unable to connect to game server. Please make sure you have a valid internet connection." and I get kicked back to the login screen again.
