After not seeing a single ESO video for over a year, i've recently watched some new build videos post summerset and i see maelstrom weapons nowhere to be found.

As a player who grinded hours on hours for the perfect maelstrom weapons and traits are these weapons completely obsolete now?

not at all, i have heard people still making builds with them even now in my guild chats.
although imo they are not good weapons, and i think they did receive a small nerf, but many people think differently.
if ask in zone chat many people might give you some build ideas that use those weapons.
best in slot: is the armor, weapon, clothing look, pet, or no pet, jewelry, race, class, skill choices, amount of DPS, and skin color best fit to you and the way you wish to play and makes you feel good and performs what YOU think it should be.

worst in slot: what you read in zone chat, and forum comment, and forum thread, and you tube video, and live streamer advice, and class rep advice, and guild chat advice, and whisper told you to wear, and use for skill, and dress like, and use for weapon and armor.

Maelstrom staves and bows used to be practically mandatory for end-game content

So now 2 handed weapons like staves, bows and greatswords, etc. count as 2 item bonus slots for set gear.

So Maelstrom weapons have gone from "practically mandatory" to "very useful but potentially outweighed by having 2 full gear bonuses and a monster helm on your build."

Is there many situations in which a maelstrom 2h would outweigh any 4 and 5 piece set addition?

pvp two handed sword maelstrom is god as usual but in pve you can still run the bow and staves you just sacrifice 100% uptime on your secondary 5 pieace if you need it.

Personally, I'd lean towards an Asylum 2h now. But, that's because the ultimate gain is nice for my purposes. I wouldn't scoff at a Master's 2h. At the moment, I'd be inclined to say the Maelstrom 2h is the weakest of the three.

Maelstrom bow is still advantageous to have on your backbar on stam builds, since the damage boost it gives endless hail is nothing to scoff at. Worry less about maelstrom and more about if you want to farm the blasted new trial sets.

Though since we also have transmute stations now, which lets you change the undesirable traits of items drops it's SLIGHTLY less of a tiresome grind.
