overland is like 95% of the enitre game content. Rest is dungeons/trials, pvp and non combat stuff. This is the problem - almost whole game is easy.

First 15 or so levels are very easy, but that's because you're still learning the mechanics, after this combat scaling starts to wear off, your gear is out levelled and you'll likely find a world boss to stomp on you.

Yes it's a bit much for vets levelling alts, but new players that just light attack and cast a random skill every 5-10 seconds, yes it's probably needed.

Overland shouldn't be that hard, otherwise over 70% of the player base would QQ about it. If your friend wants a challenge, tell him to get to v300 and start doing DLC stuff (dungeons, trials, etc). Should make him change his mind.

when it was hard and there was zones people were complaining
ohh its too hard the mobs are too hard i can't explore im giving up this game
make it so its easier they can go exploring different zones now they are complaining
ohh its too easy im giving up this game

Some people you can never please...

I think you're talking about two different people's. I doubt they are the same ones because damn..this game was easy before..now it's a joke.

Overland had always an entry-level difficulty. The only challenge you could get is soloing worldbosses(including the DLC ones). In exception of half a dozen, all of them are doable. Try that.

Trying to Solo a World Boss as a low level, even WITH Champ Points is guaranteed suicide. I'd love to see someone do it.

I soloed all base game WB at my cp215 mag dk back before morrowind. Only grouped up for gargoyle in Rivenspire and Golden saint in Stonefalls.

My thoughts pretty much. Simple solution, play another game that suits you. You are beating a dead horse and you'll find zero satisfaction trying to ruin the game for the vast majority that enjoys it as is.

I remember the good 'ol times when some quest bosses like Doshia were hard and required players to think, self-heal and sustain resources. Even Mannimarco and Molag Bal were a bit of a challenge, it took a while to kill them.

Your friend is correct btw, quest content is way too easy. Apparently even for players that dont have much experience with the combat system and classes. It will only get better when he starts doing veteran dungeons, in the meantime he can solo world-bosses if he wants a challenge.

Many people have suggested adding veteran overland mode (similar to the dungeon setting) to make questing more challenging. Its not like normal dungeons take something away from people who do veteran dungeons.

The PvE is almost brain dead a single light attack and force pulse kills a mob, there is no engagement at all. Its gotten to the point where you can pug trials, the game has a large gap between this. It goes from very easy overland content which players get bored of and they go for vet trials and get destroyed so they have to go back and learn the game in a very boring overland and then end up leaving because they don't want to grind it all.

See, there are plenty of people who still find overland questing in this game hard - Last night, I was in a delve on my level 35 petless sorc (new char), and admittedly I do have 742 CP. However, also in there was a CP 620-something, using a 2 handed weapon, and he was getting wrecked by the delve mobs and especially the delve boss (172K Health). All he knew how to do was light and heavy attacks, and he had just ONE skill allocated, and could not understand the skill bar system. I killed the boss for him, and spoke to him.

He had come from Skyrim, and was still in first person mode. He didn't know that the 3rd person camera even existed until I told him. He said the crafting and set system was too complex and was wearing just dropped/found armor that was incomplete sets that didn't even sync up. He had spread his attribute points across evenly, and had 24 health, 20 magicka and 20 stamina. He thought that ESO would handle just like skyrim does. He didn't have anything other than a mobile phone to look up stuff and wouldn't go near forums due to past experiences with other games.

He had been playing the game for over 6 months like this! His gear was a combination of greens and blues, and he had been randomly allocating CP points across all the stars.

So, so much to teach him, its going to take a while. He is confused as to why this game isn't just like skyrim, as its an Elder Scrolls title.

This is a classic example of your average player in ESO, especially on console. Remember, console now accounts for 2/3 of the ESO playerbase.

You can't seriously believe this is an average player. A person that does no effort whatsoever to figure out the mechanics of the game should not be used as a baseline for difficulty. Else you can just as well remove all those mechanics.
And the fact that he made it to 600+ CP playing like this shows the difficulty is ridiculously low...

Overland is meant for casual exploring/questing/gathering/etc...

I'm fine with the way it is, the only thing I wish to be included in new zones are the implementation of group daily quests and group delves like in Craglorn. Something that is meant to be done in small groups but can be done solo, although it would be challenging to do so. Just 2-3 instances of such areas within a zone would drastically improve overland/solo play I think as many end-game players only have veteran DLC dungeons and veteran Trials to keep them occupied. Or they're forced to run through Craglorn however many times they had done so before.

    Too Hard?

Everyone has an opinion and there are easy and hard things to do in the game. But, the point is, are you having fun? If you are, keep playing, if your not, find something else to do.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Considering you can hit Level 8 by the time you exit the starting area, I'm not sure your friend has experienced much to comment on?

Battle Leveling to CP160+ is a huge part of the problem. Content is either set to be faceroll easy, or nay impossible. Always has been. (at least since zone leveling was removed)

Of course the game is supposed to be relatively easy at low levels. What fun is it when you continuously die with a new character?

Tell him to work towards the end-game content. As you progress further and further, that safety net disappears and your build matters. To be more cynical, tell him to grind Dolmens to CP 160 and climb out of the hell hole of 10k or less health. Trust me, that in its own right is difficult.

As someone who has played the original design and now OT I prefer the older model. This way I can go back on my own and not worry about an enemy being a challenge, I simply go where I need to and get what I want and than leave. Right now with OT that is not the case and it becomes quite frustrating for some overland bosses or other task that I know in the past I could go back and kick butt once I am high enough level and geared.

OT does provide a bit more freedom that a level 3 character can go into any zone but honestly, that makes no sense as some zones should be level or CP restricted to ensure only end game players are able to access those zones.

Levels 1-10 are super easy and level 10-20 are not that hard but when you hit level 10 you usually end up getting to fight some overland bosses and that is the first time you get your butt handed to you and not until that time does the game feel challenging, even after that, the challenge goes away once you get a player with 200+ CP to help you out.

The other thing I dislike with OT is gear; the old system the gear stats would not change but with OT gear stats seem to drop as you level up. I prefer the old model it is a better design IMO.

This is similar to the starting story of Cold Harbor vs. what we have now. I prefer Cold Harbor zone and would rather play that 100x compared to one run through the new starter quest.

Also, I dislike automatically having my character show up in Summerset vs. the Alliance intro island that was in the original game. I rather go back to the old intro and story.

If zones had level restrictions, we would not see level 3 in Summerset and there would be some challenge again given that OT would be removed. I miss the old system.

I think the amount of people thinking that easy = bad is grossly outnumbered by the amount of people who think hard = bad.
People always say they want a challenge and love hard content because they want to be perceived as strong and bold.
But as a matter of fact humans tend to take the easy road. People take the path of lest resistance. People dont like "hard". They think they want a challenge and overcome it but once they have to do something "hard" which is synonymous with inconventient they tend to quit.

Everyone thinks they are hardass heroes that want to beat the biggest and baddest of bosses. But once they wipe 3 times they tend to give up. I personally love that I can blaze through overland stuff, have stuff die within two attacks. If every encounter would take me 30 seconds to complete I´d quit.

There are plenty of threads, especially in the past and sometimes even now, where people with traditionally harder to play classes (say stam NB and stam DK with no decent source of sealfheal) complain about content being too hard because once you have 3+ enemies they fail horribly.

Tell your friend that he should play some more. Its absolutely true that overland is easy but if he wants a challenge he can also go naked or not use buff food or keep his gear 10 level below character level.

Or just consider that the game might just not be for him. There is no shame in not liking something. Btw level 6 is.... 30 minutes into the game? Tell your friend to give it time.

Why is there never a 'medium' in these discussions.?

When someone says they think its too easy, it doesn't necessarily mean they want it to be hard

Actually they do. Too easy means not challenging enough. Challenging implies hard.

But semantics aside, I get your point, there is a line between oneshotting and Dark Souls.
Still it is very hard to find that line for several reasons. Most of us talk from a perspective of long-time gamers. There are people who never played before or are not used to this playstyle.
One persons too easy can be hard for another person.

vMA is very easy once you get used to it and complete it several times, yet there are people who never actually finish it. Several guilds speedrun vTrails, other guilds (or pugs) never make it past some bosses. Difficulty is perceived very differently for each and every person, so there will never be a middle ground.

It used to require some tactics and setup, back at launch. I mean, I leveled to max vr back then, it wasn't HARD but it was far less forgiving. Abilities would regularly oneshot you if you didn't dodge them and getting knocked down was really bad.

Yes, it's easy, but it was never hard to beging with. Also, if you made him gear, then that completely trivializes the game, but that's like complaining in WoW that solo content is too easy in mythic raiding gear.

    Which is just completely dumb.

So many people talking trash about the OP and their Lvl8 friend. Like c’mon people. Have you all played the game for so long and become so stubborn you’ve totally forgotten about the new player experience? It doesn’t matter if they understand every mechanic in the game or have run vMoL HM or whatever. Were talking about people that have just picked up the game and are experiencing their “first impressions” for ESO.

I consider myself very lucky to have quested through ESO before One Tamriel. The level of difficulty in all zones that you now face (with no gear, zero CP, etc) is at the level of Glenumbra mobs pre-One Tamriel..... there are very few enemies that provide any level of difficulty to you anymore in Overland as a purely new player. Those exceptions are mostly in DLC zones too.

Also the progression felt AWESOME pre-One Tamriel. Now you get weaker as you level up? And when you get new, cool gear, you actually are just trying to build yourself back up to the strength you had prior to your current gear getting scaled down? That’s a very strange and not so compelling system.

One of the best things for me when I was a new player was being able to go from Glenumbra to Rivenspire to fight enemies that were much tougher. Enemies who actually hit hard and challenged me to use my brain to figure out a strategy that wasn’t simply Light Attack spam or spamming one skill to beat everything. Then when I hit higher levels I could travel to Veteran level zones and quest in Overland with true difficulty. It was amazing. If you attempt that now you can just one shot everything with no issue whatsoever.

I’ve asked for and have seen TONS of requests for “Veteran” versions of zones to bring that feeling of at least mild difficulty back into Overland. Furthermore there could even be an Under Lvl50 version so that you can quest in peace without a high level barging through and slaughtering everything.

What game isn’t too easy during the first 30 minutes..?

But yea... it doesn’t really get harder until some Vet stuff.

It goes from too easy, straight to suicide if your entire group isn’t full of meta builds pulling 40k+ DPS.

    There is no in between.
