Darien Gautier: Holes from Summerset to Coldharbour

NuclearSqworms
I am a new returning player - the last I played was Beta, I believe. Summerset advertising brought me back - and I purchased all of the DLC I missed. I'm only stating this, because other people may have a similar experience.

I started my new game in Summerset and completed all of the DLC quests. During the Summerset questline,
Darien decides to sacrifice himself to power a sword.
Upon completing the Summerset main questline, it was suggested I do the original main quest line. Upon reaching Coldharbor,
as Ebonheart Pact, I assemble a team to confront Molag Bal and prevent the planes from melding. Darien was part of this team and pretended nothing happened.

So I am assuming this is a bug. There is a huge hole in the story between the two.

the wonders of non-linear linear plot!!

the main quest is meant to take place before summerset events....so that kind of throws the other stuff into a mess

It's an anachronism caused by the game's canonical timeline.

The Planemeld/events of the base game take place first chronologically, then each DLC/Chapter in order (so base game Alliance plots and Coldharbour -> Craglorn -> IC- > Orsinium -> TG -> DB -> Morrowind -> CWC -> Summerset, plus scatter the dungeon DLCs in there but so far they haven't mattered as far as timeline placement). It introduces inconsistencies when you start "later" in the timeline.

To my knowledge they haven't gone back and updated older content to reflect the newer content you've done (the opposite is true, however, and characters will recognize you if you helped them earlier in the timeline) , which is unfortunate, but it's intended. ):

It seems they should start new players at the beginning of the timeline, then.

If you haven't done Coldharbor, Darien basically explains in Summerset that its non-linear time and that you haven't yet done the thing he remembers you fondly from (Coldharbor) and that you have no clue what he's talking about, but it doesn't matter and he's fond of you anyway.

The Darien in Coldharbor isn't yet a champion of Meridia, and presumably you don't tell him anything for fear of breaking the timeline and retroactively handing over Crystal Tower to Nocturnal and destroying the world.

I must not have payed attention to his explanation in Summerset (probably because it didn't make sense). Even when he appears in Coldharbor there is really not an explanation as to why he is at the table in Coldharbor when you first see him.

He's there in Coldharbor because he's the DC character along with Gabrielle Benele. Both of those have plenty of things to do in the DC zones. We see other characters from the different faction questlines like Gathwen/her master and Walks-in-Ash & Holgunn, but Darien gets a little more center stage because they wanted to set him up as important.
