Exemplary Infused come from Psijic portals. One Exemplary Protective piece is rewarded from finishing the Psijic questline.

You get 1 from the guild line and 1 from the main Summerset quest, after that it's portals,
if you can find any, I'm having a bad run from RNjesus tonight

    "PROTECTIVE

Researchable Item: A researchable ring is awarded at the end of the Summerset main quest line and a researchable necklace is awarded at the end of the Psijic Order quest line.

Researchable Item: Necklaces and rings with the Triune Trait have a chance to be awarded when you complete the new Cyrodiil Conquest board quests (note, not the repeatable quests).

    INFUSED

Researchable Item: Necklaces and rings with the Infused Trait have a chance to drop from Psijic Portals, found all over Tamriel.

    SWIFT

Researchable Item: Necklaces and rings with the Swift Trait have a rare chance to be awarded when completing normal Jewelry Crating Writs.

    HARMONY

Researchable Item: Necklaces and rings with the Harmony Trait have a rare chance to be found within Undaunted chests.

    BLOODTHIRSTY

Researchable Item: Necklaces and rings with the Bloodthirsty Trait have a chance to be awarded as part of the regular rewards for completing weekly Trial quests. Note that reward boxes from Trial quests completed before the release of ESO: Summerset do not contain jewelry with the Bloodthirsty Trait."

    SWIFT - HA.

    9 daily writs x 20 days = 180 - not one piece.

    Guess it's only 1 per 1000.

Is the exemplary item e.g. exemplary nirhoned bow consumed when you research the trait?

Yes, but once the research completes, you can make an item that another character, your own or another player's, can research. Trading these derivatives is expected.

Ran into this recently when I discovered I had to learn the nirnhoned trait on an item in order to craft a particular set (required 9/9traits ). Had a guild mate craft a level 1 version, which is now under going extensive research. (28 days? Yikes!)
