New player, Overwhelmed on class selection, can't decide and need some help please!

Cyngar
Cyngar
I'll try to make this short and hope for some good feedback. I know picking a class is "what looks fun" and roll with it. But this game is pretty different than typical MMO and I really need help, I'm loving the game but getting discouraged quickly.

I bought the game last week. With having a newborn I don't get to play much. I would like to pvp mostly, typically I enjoy melee characters in MMO (Warriors/Paladin/Rogue and occasionally a magic user but usually end up healing)

After searching online, I decided to give a Warden a go. Heard a lot of killer things about them in PvP. So here we are 1 week later and im lvl 22 and honestly I don't like the class, solo mob grinding it is fun with the bear but Dung and especially pvp I just hate it. I have tried 2h/bow and 2h/1h//shield and it's just not for me. Can't put my finger on it yet, not sure if its the 2bars I have to swap to or what, but he's not fun at all.

This leads me to ask advice for suggestions. I have a few questions that i need help with please.
  • With my limited playtime, I'm not sure how much time i need to invest into a character before I know I like them or not, whats a good lvl?
  • For class selection, can you give me some ideas? I guess I'll look at magika if I have to, but prefer melee based and not above rolling a healer that can do dmg and be annoying as hell to kill the same time. I was hoping for something that isn't a glass canon and good mobility. Open to try anything.
  • Where is the best place to look up builds for summerset? when I google I see certain people pop up alot that are "popular" but the comments on them are either laughing or copy of other builds or the builds assume you are a veteran.
  • Lastly, I was in cyrodiil last night and at the vender. there was a girl vendor I think sell gear boxes for 5k points. but there were like 20options. where can I go to find out what would be in them?
  • I'm in 2 guilds, how do I find where if at all do the has a vendor to sell things?

Thanks

[*] With my limited playtime, I'm not sure how much time i need to invest into a character before I know I like them or not, whats a good lvl?
IMO every single class and stam or magic flavor is a lot of fun to play and has tremendous potential for interesting builds, especially for PVP, which is a lot more flexible compared to PVE dps builds

You can play for 4 years and still come up with new stuff nobody else has tried before. There is not any specific time frame. But you can get an idea of endgame playing experience for the class if you install PTS, just try playing fully max level template character, you can try lots of different builds and see what you enjoy

Personally i feel mag NB is the most fun class to play but they are all a lot of fun. You can definitely make viable pvp character with any class and magicka or stamina. It takes lot of time practicing to become good at pvp in any class, and it takes even more time and research coming up with your own original build concept, but for me this is the most fun part of the game.

If you want to play melee stam build, I'd suggest stam NB, stam warden (even after recent slight nerf to shimmering shield), stamplar. Stam DK and stam sorc also can be strong in pvp, but they have fewer stam-based class abilities.

[*] Where is the best place to look up builds for summerset? when I google I see certain people pop up alot that are "popular" but the comments on them are either laughing or copy of other builds or the builds assume you are a veteran.
I strongly recommend to spend time to research sets and come up with your own builds. This is a lot of fun.

I would not waste AP on those boxes. Save your AP to buy stuff that you can resell for gold, or monster helms, or gold jewelry from the weekend vendor.

I know your pain, have a little boy too... so I guess you should not rush and just enjoy the trip.
Regarding leveling, I play since 2015 on ps4 with a lot of breaks to play other games, and Im CP 200 right now. This game is not as painful to lvl as asian mmos.
Regarding class, if you like melee, try stamina dk or nb ;)

I was going to suggest Warden or Templar as they are the most survivable at lower levels. They also seem to have the lowest ceiling for damage dealers.

If you are going melee, you will want to put most of your attribute points into stamina and most of your skills will come from non class skill lines. That makes class selection almost moot. Almost. Nightblades and Sorcerers are the most prevalent but really only you can decide what is fun for you.

If you are looking for a melee PVP build, warden would be near the top of my recommendations. The only stamina class I am really not a fan of in PVP is stam DK. They make great PVE damage dealers, but I feel like in PVP everything they do, someone else can do a bit better.

If your goal is to take a pounding, warden is very good. They get their kills by lining up burst combos, with sub assault at the center of it. If you are looking for a true brawler class, they are hard to beat.

I find stamina templars to be my toughest counter, personally. They have good pressure, can debuff you very well, and can purge negative effects, which really comes in handy 1v1. Stamplars are amazing in duels.

I think if you asked the internet who the most OP stam class is, the answer you would get would be stamina nightblade. They are elusive, and have great burst, but like any class, they have their counters. They dont have the healing of some of the other classes, so if you can catch one, you can usually kill one. I think nightblade (magic and stam) is the most well rounded class in the game.

For melee, you could also consider Magic DK or Magic Templar.

Magic DK is about pressure, CCs, and they can take a beating. They usually get kills by wearing down their opponents, and bursting with ultimates. Magplars arent as powerful as they once were, but if you have any thought to healing, its a solid choice.

Perhaps the bigger issue is your level. A level 22 character (of any class) is only going to have access to a handful of skills, and often the good ones dont come until later. Your character will feel very different once it is properly leveled. Regardless of what you choose, I would go all in on something until you get a few hundred CP under your belt before you roll a bunch of alts.

For the love of god, do not start spending AP on gear boxes at your level. You shouldnt spend anything on gear until you are at level 50, AND have 160 champion points. That is the gear cap. Once you are there, then you can comfortably invest in gear you know will last (at least until the next patch).

Edit: if you are on PC/NA, I would be happy to craft you some basic gear to help you get started. Just shoot me a message in game.

Being new to the game, and knowing you want to go PvP primarily, I would check out some ESO PvP videos that focus on stamina builds. Just go see what they can do, to give you a basic idea of what you might prefer. Being limited on time, this might help get you on the right path for you.

You may need to make one stamina character for every class and just run with them a bit to see what you end up liking best. I can tell you I love my stam sorc and my stam DK, but am less interested in the other stamina class builds.

You do have to give it a little time, because each class has varying levels that the stamina skills unlock in the class skills. You still get your weapon skills, but sometimes what the class skills can do stamina wise matters on if a person will find that build fun or not.

    Melee PvP = Stamina Nightblade.

Alternatively you can go Stamina Sorcerer for heavy Damsge over Time skills, or Stamina Dragonknight for heavy Poison skills. But Nightblades are the common choice. Stealthy, hard hitting single target, a class execute skill and a high damage cheap ultimate.

Do you have an idea of what playstyle you like in other games? That can help you decide. When i started out I found it really helpful to look at the classes and compare their qualities to classes in other games and try them out based on my assumptions about their stereotypes.

Stamina Dragonknight = Classic Barbarian tank with heavy armor

Magic Templar = Classic "stand your ground" healer, the center of the party, can wear heavy armor (but for PVE usually wears light armor)

Stamina Nightblade = The full sneak combo, with stealth, high critical damage and agility-like attacks

Magic Sorcerer = The wizard or arcane mage that deals high pure damage

Of course there are tons more stereotypes than that, but that is the fun of the game.

As far as when you find out if you like a character or not, I quit my first character (A sorcerer healer back when that was not viable) around level 22. I think that gives you a few good levels to experiment with their full range of skills and decide if it works for you. But you should have a flavour by level 10-15 of what they play like.

If you want to be tanky with plenty of heals and deal damage magicka Dragonknight is a great class. Roll a dumner and go Vampire. If you’re on PC NA hit me up, I’ll give you a bite.

If you really want to just PvP grind out to level 50 at least, in order to really get a feel for your character.

Guides and builds online can help you get a feel for your class, skills, rotations etc but in time you’ll find that most of those builds are trash. Good luck.

Sadly on xb for now. Might switch to pc once I have the time to get it back up and running properly.

I want to go all in on something and no alts for now. That's my plan for the warden but in just hating the class in pvp and dung. I'm not use to this 2 bar swap etc so it's throwing me off alot.

I considered a templar for dps/heals but not too sure and I made a stam nb and only like lvl 6.

If I can suggest, take a look at some of the builds online (I like Deltia, but I always play mages) and watch a few videos of what looks good to you. Since it's your first go, I don't think anyone expects you to be an expert if you're brand new, but there are a lot of great folks here that can help. I will warn you though that a lot of what they tell you is for players above level 50 and when your out in the "real" game (most of us think of levels 1-50 as a tutorial) so you'll need to make it very clear that your working low level here. Good Luck! Enjoy! I'm on my way back after a year off this weekend.

You’ll see people talk about how a class isn’t good at this or that - don’t worry about it. It takes a looong time before class balance actually impacts your gameplay.

Pick whichever class matches you best! To put it simply:
    • DKs are the fire/earth/poison class with lots of aggressive, dragon-themed skills
    • Sorcs are the lightning/magic mages and wind warrior class that have lots of pets
    • NBs are the rogue, stealthy class with a lot of “blood magic” looking skills and great stuff for high damage
    • Templars are the holy light magic, paladin-like class
    • Wardens are the frost and nature magic class, with pets and some animal-themed skills. However, this class requires you to own ESO: Morrowind or you can purchase it from the Crown Store for 1500 Crowns ($14.99)

Look up some gameplay of each, decide what you like and play it. All will work well for you :)

Doesn't matter how many "Classes" are in a game. There are always 3 archtypes. Tank, DD (melee/ranged), and Healer. With ESO. you're free to play any class in any of the roles.

As far as the 3 roles go, here's the class that is "best"
    Tank - Dragonknight
    DD - Nightblade. Sorc
    Healer - Templar

That should limit your choices for you based on what your preferred playstyle is.

For picking a class some of the key points are:
    • Magicka characters get shields/Stamina characters get more dodge-rolls/break-free (break-free is possibly the most important cooldown to keep track of).
    • Sorcerers get a dash (high mobility).
    • Nightblades get a fear (un-blockable CC).
    • Wardens get a wombo-combo.
    • Dragon Knights are bulky (bit of everything).
    • Templars are slow but get utility.

Also, one build is never going to be able to do everything, so it would be good to decide on if you want to be an off-tank or burst damage etc.

I would watch videos of people playing classes until it makes you say "by the divines that looks fun".

    Good luck!

2h has more "burst" damage than DW. That's why you see it in most PvP builds. It's also the easiest way to spot a PvPer in dungeons.

I think the real reason you see it is for snare removal. Forward Momentum is one of the most powerful PVP skills there is. Being able to remove snares is vital in open world PVP. Most magic specs run Vamp for mist form, and most stamina specs run 2H for forward momentum. In a group, you can get away without it if you have some spamming rapids.

At level 22, your options are wide open. You could make a new toon and be at 50 tomorrow if you put your mind to it. Not saying you necessarily should, but the point is that I wouldn't feel bound to a level 22 character.

I think you will feel more powerful on a NB a little sooner than on warden. You wont be bound to a 2H anymore than any other class. I would certainly recommend it at first, but NB can absolutely be played as a DW character in PVP. In PVE, everyone runs DW for what its worth..

If this is still about confusion on enjoyment...

This is a wholly different perspective. I'm one of those PvE 'trying to play it like an Elder Scrolls game' types... I'm having fun with a Stam/Mag combo Nord Dragon Knight (dual wield swords) at the moment.

With my crafting character, I've put together a double-whammy armor/weapon set that covers my play style weaknesses. A 5 piece set of Mechanical Acuity (15% chance of all hits critical for 5 secs.) and 5 piece set of Night Mother's Gaze (when you get crit, you reduce their physical resistance by 5280 for 6 secs.) Not the best end game setup by far.

My big point is, play to your style, have fun. This isn't the best armor combo or character choice for most, but it covers my personal playing style well for now. If you don't enjoy how it's going, you may just have to venture off the beaten path a bit to find something to suit you.

To the OP - play the way you want. I can tell you from experience, I have been on the bandwagon that Wardens are terrible but when I physically played one myself, I found him to be extremely enjoyable. Your experience is what you make it. Do not focus on your build until you hit CP 160 and decide what kind of role you want to fulfill. Some classes are better at certain roles than others but they can still work. There are different builds for different classes so ignore the cookie-cutter builds you see from Alcast and the other top ESO YouTubers.

play to level 10 to test different classes. I would say go for a magicka templar. has healing can be tanky. uses magicka melee skills and an ultimate, decent dmg not the best though. mag dk is also fun and Mag sorc is hands down the best pvp class atm. Mag templar have mobility problems but can be solved with going vampire or acceleration from the psijic skill line. My first character was a high elf magicka Templar, still love it today and is my favourite to play.

I would suggest you choose your character based on the aesthetics, its after all the most important thing for personal satisfaction. If you dont like looking at your skills, they will become boring.

Dragonknight: Firebased, Flaming Sword, Flaming Claws, Flaming Whips, Lavaspikes coming out of your back. All very Fiery
Nightblade: Shadow and Bloodbased. Lots of Blackand Purpleish aminations, red suckingskills, bloody projectiles, vanishes into shadowy figures etc.
Templar: Light and Divinebased. Lots of Gold and bright and holy animatons. Also Divine Fires
Sorcerer: Lightninbased. Lots of Lighning Strikes and Blue and White Spellanimations. Also some Blackish Curses. Plus some Daedric Pets who honestly look godawful
Warden: Naturebased. Lots of Trees, and Pets. Green animations, some blue tuckered in. Unfortunately very little Ice-Animations despite it being an advertised trait of the class.

All the classes perform well in Non-Veteran Environment, and they are all fun before you get to Highendcontent.
If youre interested in highend and competetive content, stay away from Warden though.

    Hope I could help
